Broadway Holiday Shows 2019: Rockettes, Ballet, And All Kinds Of Holiday Magic

The 2019 Holiday season is upon us and the merriest shows on Broadway have begun their annual performances. Everything from breathtaking magic shows to elegant ballet routines have started arranging their acts in order to get each and every audience member into the holiday spirit. With many holiday shows making their annual debut, tickets are already being sold allowing the most die-hard fans to lock in their seats now for these yearly performances.

Radio City Musical Hall’s legendary Rockettes dance troupe has entertained America since their debut in the mid 1920’s and has performed everywhere from The Super Bowl to Presidential Inaugurations.

As the holiday season approaches, the precision dance troupe performs their annual holiday tradition show, The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.

What To Expect

Over the course of the 90 minute show, the Rockettes celebrate the holiday season through humor, singing, and their world-famous coordinated and deceivingly complex dances, set to well known musical numbers such as 'Santa’s Gonna Rock and Roll' and 'Here Comes Santa Claus'.

With over 150 performers, the show is a masterclass in choreography and an excellent way to rejoice in the spirit of the holidays. The 2019 Christmas Spectacular show opened on November 8th, 2019 and is set to run to its closing night on January 5th, 2020.

The Illusionists: Magic of the Holidays

The traveling magic troupe, The Illusionists, return to Broadway for their fifth holiday show since their official debut in 2012. The act that critics have called magic’s version of “Cirque du Soleil” captivates Broadway audiences with their holiday-themed live show, aptly titled Magic of the Holidays.

With a mixture of thrilling visuals, uptempo music, and the troupe’s talented cast of seven master magicians, Magic of the Holidays transforms the Neil Simon Theatre into a mystical winter wonderland. Witness breathtaking stage illusions, death-defying escapology, and mind-boggling mentalism, in this magnificent magic show.

The 2019 Magic of the Holidays show opens on November 29th, 2019 and runs until its closing night on January 5th, 2020.

The New York City Ballet’s classic annual performance of The Nutcracker at the David H Koch Theatre has been a tradition since its original NYC debut in 1954. The world’s largest theatrical production company, Cirque du Soleil, returns to the Broadway stage at the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden for the 2019 Holiday season with Twas the Night Before... Their last holiday-themed Broadway production was Wintuk in 2007, so this is a welcome return.

Twas the Night Before... is an acrobatic reimagining of Clement Clark Moore’s classic holiday poem. Twas the Night Before... opens on December 12th, 2019 and is set to run to its closing date of December 29th, 2019 with a total of 30 performances.

Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story is returning to Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre for the first time in over a decade. This classic tale has entertained audiences for over a century through its cheerful message of personal growth and family values.

What To Expect

Follow Ebenezer Scrooge grow by witnessing Christmases past, present, and future, and learn that it's not too late to change the negative impact he has left on the world. The show is led by playwright Jack Thorne and director Matthew Warchus, whose creative input will put all audience members in the holiday spirit.

A Christmas Carol opens on November 20th, 2019 and will run until its closing date on January 5th, 2020.

Slava's Snowshow

Some call it the Russian Cirque du Soleil, but Slava’s Snowshow is less a circus and more a musical performance show that is set in a dream-like winter vision filled with many comical tricks and surprises. The Snowshow is broken up into different winter themed scenes with each pushing the boundaries of the stage.

What To Expect

The story follows Slava, a curious clown, who meets other peculiar characters which take him in and change his life. The performers astonish with surreal visuals like colorful balloons that cover the stage. The show also features floating sharks that swim around the room and make the theatre feel like an underwater ocean.

Slava's Snowshow opened on November 13th, 2019 and will run until its closing date on January 5th, 2020

Big Apple Circus

The world renowned Big Apple Circus tent is back in NYC and performs in its usual outdoor location at Damrosch Park, which is between the David H Koch Theatre and the Lincoln Center Bandshell. This classic circus performance takes on a brand new show style.

The circus’s hilarious and long-time ringleader, Barry Lubin, who played Grandma, announced in January 2019 that he was stepping down. The new ringleader of the Big Apple Circus, Storm Marrero, announced a whole new format to the show that brings the spectacle into the 21st century.

What To Expect

The new show did not get rid of some its best annual acts. The new show still features acts which include, beautiful horses who perform dazzling tricks, soaring aerialists and dramatic jugglers. Due to their popularity, The Fabulous Wallendas return to the show.

They perform daunting jumps and their signature routine is the ‘Human Pyramid’, which they do while balancing on a 30ft tall tightrope over the gazing crowd. Seats for the show are no more than 50 feet away from the edge of the circus ring and most guests leave the show amazed and in awe of what they have witnessed.

The Big Apple Circus opened on October 12th, 2019 and will perform almost daily until its closing date on February 2nd, 2020 for a total run of 16 weeks.
