A couple fleeing their troubled past move into a London apartment, where terrifying supernatural events escalate into a relentless psychological and paranormal nightmare

What's Paranormal Activity Like?

A Live Horror Experience

Paranormal Activity is designed more like a theatrical haunted house than a traditional Broadway play. The production relies heavily on suspense, darkness, sudden noises, lighting tricks, and practical stage illusions rather than gore or comedy.

Audience members often describe it as tense and genuinely frightening, with long stretches of quiet that build anxiety before sudden jump scares.

Atmosphere and Style

The show has a dark, cinematic atmosphere similar to the original films. Much of the action takes place inside a modern apartment where strange paranormal events slowly escalate. The staging uses moving walls, hidden effects, distorted sound, and visual illusions to make ordinary rooms feel unsettling and unpredictable.

Director Felix Barrett brings some of the immersive horror style he developed in Sleep No More.

Audience Experience

Unlike many Broadway thrillers that lean campy or playful, Paranormal Activity aims for realism and psychological fear. Reactions from London and touring audiences included screaming, nervous laughter, and people physically jumping in their seats.

The experience is intended to feel intense, claustrophobic, and suspenseful from beginning to end.

Is Paranormal Activity Good for Kids?

Paranormal Activity is aimed at teens and adults and would likely be too intense for most younger children.

Paranormal Activity on Broadway Background

Development of the Stage Adaptation

Paranormal Activity was adapted from the hugely successful horror film franchise created by Oren Peli. Instead of retelling the movie plots, playwright Levi Holloway created an original supernatural story specifically for the stage.

The production was directed by Felix Barrett, founder of the immersive theatre company Punchdrunk and creator of Sleep No More. The show blends psychological horror with practical stage illusions, sound effects, and sudden visual shocks designed to recreate the tension of the films in a live setting.

Original UK Premiere

The production premiered in July 2024 at Leeds Playhouse in England. The world premiere received strong reviews for its inventive staging and intense atmosphere.

Following its success in Leeds, the production transferred to London’s West End at the Ambassadors Theatre, where it gained attention as one of the rare horror plays to generate genuine audience screams and jump scares.

North American Productions

After the UK success, Paranormal Activity launched a North American tour in 2025. Major engagements included Chicago Shakespeare Theater in Chicago, the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC, American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and a Toronto engagement.

The production continued refining its effects and staging during the tour.

Broadway Transfer

The show is now scheduled to arrive on Broadway in 2026 at the August Wilson Theatre for a limited engagement. Producers include Jason Blum of Blumhouse, the studio behind the original Paranormal Activity films.
