An Uncomfortable Premise

Bruce Norris’s Downstate takes place in an Illinois group home where four men convicted of sex offenses against minors are living after serving their prison sentences. Their freedom remains heavily restricted by registration requirements, supervision and rules governing where they can live.

A Victim Returns

The fragile routine is disrupted when Andy, now an adult, arrives to confront Fred, the former piano teacher who sexually abused him as a child. Andy wants acknowledgment and remorse, but the encounter develops in ways neither he nor the audience may expect.

Who Deserves Sympathy?

Rather than presenting a simple battle between victim and offender, Downstate deliberately makes the situation uncomfortable. The residents differ greatly in their crimes, personalities and willingness to accept responsibility.

Norris asks audiences to consider what punishment should mean after a prison sentence has been completed and whether compassion can—or should—extend to people society finds almost impossible to forgive.

The show is not good for kids as it features explicit child sexual abuse themes, strong language and disturbing content.

A Deliberately Difficult Play

Downstate was written by Bruce Norris, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright behind Clybourne Park. The play examines four convicted sex offenders living together in a supervised group home in Illinois after completing their prison sentences. Norris developed the play after researching the restrictions and social punishment that continue to follow sex offenders after incarceration.

Chicago Premiere

The play was jointly commissioned by Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company and London’s National Theatre. It received its world premiere at Steppenwolf in 2018, directed by Pam MacKinnon. The controversial subject generated considerable attention, but the production also received strong critical recognition.

From Chicago to London

The Steppenwolf production transferred to the National Theatre in London in 2019, retaining MacKinnon as director. This established Downstate internationally before it ever reached New York.

Acclaimed New York Run

Downstate finally arrived Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 2022, with Francis Guinan, K. Todd Freeman, Glenn Davis, Eddie Torres, Susanna Guzmán, Tim Hopper, Sally Murphy and Gabi Samels. Reviews were frequently excellent, although its sympathetic examination of convicted offenders also generated controversy.

An Award-Winning Play

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle named Downstate Best Play of the 2022–23 season, cementing its reputation as one of Norris’s most acclaimed—and deliberately uncomfortable—works.

Two Shows, One Ticket Strategy

Producers Scott Rudin and Barry Diller are linking ticket sales for Downstate and Small Mouth Sounds in an unusual Broadway promotion. 

Downstate, the challenging Bruce Norris drama arriving first, is expected to be a tougher commercial sell, while Small Mouth Sounds boasts major star power from Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd, Sarah Paulson and Martin Freeman.

Beginning September 10, 2026, Downstate ticket buyers will receive priority access to purchase Small Mouth Sounds tickets before they become available to the general public. The strategy effectively uses demand for the celebrity-packed production to encourage audiences to buy tickets for the more provocative, less commercially obvious Downstate.
