Working Girl on Broadway Background
Based on the movie written by Kevin Wade and the book by playwright Bridget Carpenter, comes Working Girl, a new Broadway musical featuring music and lyrics coming by way of singer/songwriter Cyndi Lauper. Christopher Ashley directs the show and everything comes together quite well as Ashley and Carpenter have previously collaborated on many other projects including the musical adaptation of Disney’s Freaky Friday. Working Girl is based on the 1988 movie of the same name, written by Kevin Wade, directed by Mike Nichols and distributed by Twentieth Century Fox. The movie receives the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture and an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, but the film is now largely forgotten and fails to register on the top 500 films of all time. What made the movie so special was the wealth of talent in the star-studded cast that included Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, Melanie Griffith, Alec Baldwin Alec Baldwin, Joan Cusack and Philip Bosco. Even a young David Duchovny made an appearance. All of these stars were at the the top of their game at the time and they all delivered memorable performances, despite the overall lack of later interest in the film that ultimately grossed over $100 million.
In the Broadway musical version of Working Girl, Cyndi Lauper brings her ground-breaking perspective to the show with her unique style. This is the first time that Ms Lauper has written music and lyrics for an entire Broadway show, although she became the first solo woman to win a TONY Award for Best Original Score for Kinky Boots in 2013. Ms Lauper also wrote a Tony-nominated song for the Broadway musical SpongeBob SquarePants.
