Samuel D. Hunter’s acclaimed small-cast play about loneliness, compassion and a search for connection between an aunt and her nephew in rural Idaho
What's Little Bear Ridge Road Like?
Little Bear Ridge Road is a quiet, emotionally raw drama that unfolds with the intimacy of a deep conversation. Set in rural Idaho during the early COVID-19 pandemic, it centers on a grieving, reclusive nurse and her estranged nephew as they reconnect while settling a family estate.
The dialogue is naturalistic, sometimes awkward, often profound—marked by silences that say as much as words. Directed with restraint by Joe Mantello, the show eschews spectacle for subtlety, offering a meditation on loneliness, mortality, and the struggle for connection. It's slow-burning, grounded, and deeply human—less plot-driven than emotionally immersive.
Is Little Bear Ridge Road Good for Kids?
Little Bear Ridge Road is not intended for children. It’s a slow, emotionally complex drama (about 95 minutes with no intermission) that delves into grief, addiction, loneliness, cancer, and death—portraying adult themes with nuance and honesty .

Little Bear Ridge Road on Broadway Background
“Little Bear Ridge Road,” Samuel D. Hunter’s intimate drama set during the early pandemic, premiered at Steppenwolf in Chicago in 2024 before being picked up for Broadway, reuniting director Joe Mantello and star Laurie Metcalf.
However, the looming return of Scott Rudin—who was exiled from the Broadway industry in 2021 for documented abusive behavior toward his assistants over many years - now overshadows the whole production. Though Rudin claims to have reflected and apologized, his reentry into Broadway raises unease about accountability in Broadway theatre and whether he now gets to continue his career unencumbered after so many years of abuse of power.
As audiences anticipate Hunter’s heartfelt play, many are forced to grapple with whether Rudin’s artistic influence can be disentangled from his toxic legacy.
