A child creates a list of life’s joys to help a depressed parent, growing into a heartfelt, funny story about love, hope, and finding meaning.
What's Every Brilliant Thing Like?
In this one-of-a-kind solo show, a man looks back at his life and the glimmers of hope that carried him through. All told through a list of every wonderful, beautiful, and delightful thing—big, small, and everything in between—that makes life worth living.
Overview
Every Brilliant Thing is a touching, one-person play written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe. It combines humor, audience interaction, and raw honesty.
Story
A young narrator begins listing every beautiful thing in life—like ice cream and staying up late—to help his mother cope with depression. The list grows through his life, shaping his understanding of love, hope, and mental health.
Themes
The play explores resilience, human connection, and finding joy in small things. Despite its heavy subjects, it’s uplifting, funny, and ultimately a heartfelt reminder of why life is worth living.
Is Every Brilliant Thing Good for Kids?
Every Brilliant Thing is heartfelt and uplifting but explores depression and suicide; best for mature teens (12+), not suitable for young children due to emotional themes.
Every Brilliant Thing on Broadway Background
Origins
The play was created by Duncan Macmillan and comedian Jonny Donahoe, originally developed with the UK touring company Paines Plough. It began as a short monologue exploring hope and mental health.
Early Performances
It premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where its intimate, interactive storytelling style drew strong acclaim. The format encouraged audience members to join in, reading entries from the protagonist’s list of life’s joys.
International Success
Following its success in Edinburgh, it transferred Off-Broadway to the Barrow Street Theatre in 2014 and later toured globally. The show has since been performed in more than 20 countries and adapted for local audiences.
Notable Adaptations
An HBO film version further expanded its reach, cementing its reputation as a uniquely uplifting theatrical experience about resilience, empathy, and celebrating everyday beauty in life.
