Three Tall Women is a beautifully crafted drama that is playing on Broadway for the first time. It is the story of a 90 year-old woman (Glenda Jackson), who has a mild case of Alzheimer’s disease. She is being taken care of by a woman in her 50s (Laurie Metcalf), who is cynical about her life but learns from the older woman’s experience. The third main character is a young woman in her 20s, who is present as the representative from the law firm caring for the older woman’s matters.

What's Three Tall Women Like?

Three Tall Women is a play by Edward Albee that won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1994. The show debuted that year Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre, before going on tour, but the show has never before been produced on Broadway until this production. This play stunned audiences when it was first written, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Lucille Lortel Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Play.

In addition to the three women there is also a young boy, who does not speak, and is discussed frequently among the women. As the play unfolds, it becomes clear that the three women have much more in common than originally presented.

Is Three Tall Women Good for Kids?

The show is most appropriate for those aged 10 and above. Children under the age of 4 will not be permitted in the theatre.

Three Tall Women on Broadway Background

Glenda Jackson has appeared on Broadway four times, earning Tony nominations each time: in the 1965 production of The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat…, the 1981 production of Rose, the 1985 production of Strange Interlude, and most recently, in the 1988 production of Macbeth as Lady Macbeth opposite Christopher Plummer’s Macbeth.

Jackson is also a two-time Academy Award Best Actress winner, for Women in Love (1970), and A Touch of Class (1973). As for Laurie Metcalf, she is a three-time Emmy Award Supporting Actress winner for Rosanne (1992-4), and this past year she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role in A Doll’s House, Part 2.
