Samuel L Jackson stars in a revival of August Wilson's play about a family’s prized heirloom piano and the festering dispute over its future that opens old familial wounds

The Piano Lesson on Broadway Background

August Wilson’s seminal, Pulitzer Prize-winning drama The Piano Lesson returns to Broadway. This show marks the first Broadway revival in more than 30 years since the play’s premiere in 1990 that starred Carl Gordon, Charles S Dutton and S. Epatha Merkerson.

2022 Show Revival

LaTanya Richardson Jackson directs her husband, Samuel L Jackson, in this revival and she will be the first woman to direct an August Wilson play on Broadway. The show also stars Danielle Brooks and John David Washington as the sister and brother. Washington is the son of Denzel Washington.

Piano Lesson Switched From St James Theatre to the Barrymore Theatre

The Piano Lesson was scheduled to open at the St. James Theatre on September 19, 2022 but had been blocked out by the current inhabitant of that theatre, the hit revival of Into The Woods, that will now extend its engagement beyond its current limited Summer run in the Fall.

The Ethel Barrymore has about 400 fewer seats less than the St. James and the production began rehearsals on Aug. 15. 2022. This iconic playhouse is better suited to this play and was one of August Wilson’s favorite theaters, so it worked out ok. The hit revival of Into The Woods then announced their extension.

What’s The Piano Lesson Like?

A battle is brewing in the Charles household. At the center lies the family’s prized heirloom piano.

On one side, a brother plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister will go to any length to keep it and preserve the family history. Only their uncle stands in between. But even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.

Is The Piano Lesson Good for Kids?

The show contains a great of adult content and its only suitable for children over 16 years of age.
