The Audience on Broadway Background

The Audience is a new play by Peter Morgan that transfers to Broadway from London’s West End, where it received magnificent reviews. Helen Mirren (Hitchcock, The Debt) stars as Queen Elizabeth II (the present Queen of England), reprising the role she played in the 2013 West End production of The Audience, for which she received the Olivier Award for Best Actress. Mirren also played Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen, the screenplay for which was also written by Peter Morgan, and for which Mirren won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The Broadway production of The Audience is directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot: The Musical), who also directed the London production.

What's The Audience Like?

Ever since her ascension to the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has held weekly meetings with each of her prime ministers, numbering 12 over the years, who have included David Cameron, Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, John Major, Margaret Thatcher, James Callaghan, Harold Wilson, Anthony Eden, and Winston Churchill. The Audience is a fictional representation of a series of these meetings, wherein each head of state is private audience to the Queen.

Is The Audience Good for Kids?

The Audience is suitable for children of any change; however children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
