A rock group records their first album and experience the joys and frustrations of creating art as band members and the sound engineers strive for artistic perfection, battle inner demons and clash in their relationships.
What's Stereophonic Like?
Stereophonic follows a mid-1970s rock group as they record their sophomore album, after their debut record was a surprise hit and the show highlights the joys and frustrations of creating art.
Set In A Recording Studio
The play entirely takes place in a recording studio as the audience watches the band members and their engineers strive for artistic perfection, battle inner demons and clash in their personal and professional relationships.
Comparisons To Fleetwood Mac
David Adjmi’s musical play is not officially based on the band Fleetwood Mac, but the show has been compared to the band’s 1977 album Rumours due to its similar themes of music-making and the '70s-style excess of drugs, alcohol and egos.
Janis Joplin's Album Art
The show art used in the show is similar to many of Janis Joplin's albums, so this gives the impression that there were many sources of inspiration for the show, but Fleetwood Mac was the undoubtedly the primary one.
The play follows the up-and-coming rock band as they record this new album in a California music studio in 1976. The band’s personal dynamics color every corner of the process.
Arcade Fire and Will Butler
The show features music by Oscar nominee and Grammy winner Will Butler, formerly of the indie rock band Arcade Fire.
Is Stereophonic Good for Kids?
The age recommendation for the play is 16+ due to the on-stage depiction of sex, drugs and violence.
