What's Once Upon a Mattress Like?

A King suffers from an unhappy curse that renders him unable to speak. Meanwhile, his domineering wife, seizes control of the realm. To keep their son, the Prince, single, she decrees that only a princess who can pass her absurd test may marry him.

Enter Winnifred, a spirited and unconventional candidate who arrives soaking wet after swimming the castle moat. As the kingdom buzzes with anticipation, hilarity ensues, and love blossoms in unexpected ways.

This musical revival, is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea, has been on Broadway two times in the past, this production will be the third.

Some big names have appeared in the leading role on Broadway

  • Comedian Carol Burnett made her Broadway debut of portraying Princess Winnifred in the original Off-Broadway production in 1959. She later reprised the role on Broadway and in the TV adaptation of the musical.
  • The Broadway revival of the show that opened in December 1996, at the Broadhurst Theatre starred Sarah Jessica Parker as Princess Winnifred.
