Matilda is a story of a precocious 5 year-old girl who is under appreciated by her parents, who regret that she is not a boy and make sure that she knows this. Though her teacher Miss Honey realizes how special she is, the strict school principal Miss Trunchbull rules over the school like an out-of-control dictator. In the end, Matilda proves how special she is, and helps Miss Honey regain happiness in her life.

Matilda on Broadway Background

Matilda is a Broadway musical that opened in 2013 and is based on the children’s book of the same name, written by Roald Dahl. In 2009, the Royal Shakespeare Company hired Dennis Kelly as playwright, and Tim Minchin as composer to produce the musical based on the Dahl novel. After rave reviews they moved the show to the West End where it received a variety of awards, including the Oliver Award. In 2013, it opened on Broadway where it won a Tony Award for Best Musical. Matilda eventually broke the box office record at the famous Shubert Theatre. Minchin, who spent most of his career as a comedian and musician, gained overnight notoriety when he created Matilda. With a cast of children as well as adults, like the film with the same name, the show is amazingly fun for the entire family.

What’s Matilda Like?

The scenic design is as clever as the lyrics, due to set and costume designer Rob Howell and the entire spectacle will keep you at the edge of your seat. The lead actress Matilda is played by one of four brilliant young actresses who take turns at the demanding part (Mattea Conforti, Alexandra Vlachos, Mimi Ryder, Ava Briglia) but they are all equally amazing. In fact, the four actresses received a non-competitive Tony Award for Excellence in the Theatre and the show was additionally nominated for 12 Tony Awards, winning four. The comedy and the tragedy go hand in hand in this beautiful piece of theatre, but ultimately you will leave feeling fulfilled and uplifted.

Is Matilda Good for Kids?

This Broadway show is made especially for kids. With a cast, many of whom are children themselves, this show is a wonderful way to share a fun outing with your kids. It is recommended for children aged 6 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted to enter the theatre.
