Three generations of women confronting love, trauma, and family secrets, seeking connection, healing, and freedom across shifting timelines in the early 1970s and to present day

What's Liberation Like?

Liberation by Bess Wohl is a multi-generational family drama exploring the echoes of the women's liberation movement across time. The play moves between the early 1970s in Ohio, where Lizzie and her friends form a women's consciousness-raising group, and the present day, where Lizzie's daughter reflects on her mother's choices and legacy.

In the 1970s storyline, the women share intimate stories, confront societal expectations, and strive to reclaim their identities, finding both empowerment and conflict as the movement grows. The modern narrator offers wry, heartfelt commentary, questioning how much progress has truly been made and whether today's world fulfills the dreams of the women who came before.

Liberation blends humor and poignancy, weaving together memory and reality to examine love, family, and the bonds between generations.

The result is a heartfelt, reflective, and at times bittersweet theatrical experience about connection, feminism, and the enduring search for personal freedom.

Is Liberation Good for Kids?

Liberation is not recommended for kids or young teenagers. It includes content considered mature and potentially inappropriate for younger audiences.

Reasons it may not be suitable:

A group nude scene (full nudity) appears early in Act 2, staged as part of a consciousness-raising exercise. Audience phones must be sealed to prevent recording.

Dialogue includes explicit adult language and themes, including discussions on sexuality, oppression, childbirth, and personal trauma.

The play tackles complex emotional and ideological material, such as feminist identity, grief, memory, and political disillusionment.

Who might the show be appropriate for:

Adults, older teens (17+), or mature high school students who can engage with political and emotional subject matter thoughtfully.

Viewers interested in feminist history, intergenerational family drama, and memory-driven narratives.
