Escape to Margaritaville is an exciting new musical featuring the music of Jimmy Buffett, whose timeless songs, including “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” combine elements of the folk rock and lyrical elements of the Gulf coast, along with country and western undertones.

What's Escape to Margaritaville Like?

Jimmy Buffett has led an incredibly successful career over the past almost 50 years, since his first album, "Down to Earth", was released in 1970. In addition to cultivating a loyal fan base of “Parrotheads” who are devoted to his music, Buffett has also written three number 1 best-selling books and launched multiple business ventures, including two restaurant chains based off his songs. One of these, Margaritaville, has grown from its original location in Key West, Florida, founded in 1977, to its current success with dozens of locations from Florida to Jamaica to Atlantic City to California. This musical is more than your average jukebox musical; it is an additional element to a lifestyle that celebrates island relaxation and stress-free enjoyment of life. The musical had a successful try-out at the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California, with artistic director and director Christopher Ashley.

Is Escape to Margaritaville Good for Kids?

The children is most appropriate for those aged 10 and above. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

Escape to Margaritaville on Broadway Background

Jimmy Buffett is known as the original creator of the “Gulf and Western” musical style, which is denoted by a tropical dreamlike quality combined with country funkiness. The musical Escape to Margaritaville, which features both new and familiar songs by Buffett, has a book by Greg Garcia ("My Name is Earl") and Mike O’Malley ("Glee").

The story follows a part-time bartender and singer on an island paradise called Margaritaville, where a beautiful, career-driven tourist arrives and makes him question his relaxed lifestyle. These themes tie into Jimmy Buffett’s musical catalogue and the lifestyle of his many devoted fans, who are known as Parrotheads, as he celebrates the relaxed island way of life. This musical is therefore an entertaining story that both pays homage to, and critically examines, the choice to live a low-key, off the beaten path lifestyle, in comparison to capitalistic ideals. The show comes to Broadway following additional regional productions in New Orleans, Houston, and Chicago, before finally bringing the Margaritaville vibe to Times Square.
