Based on the movie of the same name, a human is mistakenly raised by elves at the North Pole, travels to New York City to find his real father, and learns about family, love, and Christmas spirit.

What's Elf Like?

Elf the Musical follows Buddy, a human who was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a baby and raised by Santa’s elves. When Buddy learns he is actually a human, not an elf, he sets off on a journey to New York City to find his biological father, Walter Hobbs, a cynical businessman who doesn't believe in Christmas and is on Santa’s naughty list.

Buddy In New York City

Buddy’s naive, overly enthusiastic personality clashes with the city’s fast-paced, cynical nature, but he remains determined to connect with his father and spread Christmas cheer. Along the way, Buddy falls for Jovie, a department store employee who is also disillusioned with life.

Buddy's Infectious Spirit

Despite numerous setbacks, including Walter's initial rejection and struggles fitting into human society, Buddy's infectious spirit eventually wins over his father, Jovie, and the people of New York. Together, they help restore the city’s Christmas spirit, proving that joy and belief can change lives.

Elf on Broadway Background

The Broadway production of "Elf the Musical" was developed as a stage adaptation of the 2003 hit film "Elf," which starred Will Ferrell. The musical was brought to life by a creative team including composer Matthew Sklar, lyricist Chad Beguelin, and book writers Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin. The show's producers aimed to capture the film's humor, heart, and holiday spirit, while adding new elements to make it a unique theater experience.

Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2010

"Elf the Musical" premiered on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on November 10, 2010, and quickly became a holiday favorite. The production was directed by Casey Nicholaw, known for his work on other successful Broadway shows like "The Book of Mormon." The set design incorporated vibrant, colorful backdrops that evoked the whimsical world of the North Pole and New York City during the holiday season.

Choreography played a significant role in the production, emphasizing the energetic and joyous nature of Buddy’s character. The cast was led by Sebastian Arcelus as Buddy, alongside Broadway veterans including Amy Spanger and Beth Leavel.

Past Appearances of Elf on Broadway

"Elf the Musical" had multiple appearances on Broadway during the holiday seasons. Here’s a list of its Broadway runs:

  1. Original Broadway Production (2010-2011): The show premiered on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on November 10, 2010, and ran until January 2, 2011.
  2. Second Broadway Engagement (2012-2013): Due to its initial success, the musical returned to Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on November 9, 2012, for a limited holiday engagement, closing on January 6, 2013.
  3. Third Broadway Engagement (2013): "Elf the Musical" came back for another holiday season on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre. This run started on November 22, 2013, and ended on January 5, 2014.

These three Broadway runs were all limited engagements specifically timed to coincide with the holiday season, making the musical a recurring festive attraction for theatergoers in New York City during those years.

The upcoming Broadway run will not be a restaging of the earlier runs, instead bringing over a 2015 production directed by Philip Wm. McKinley from London's West End.
