A Wild Mix of Comedy and Music

Blue Man Group is a fast-paced theatrical experience combining comedy, percussion, technology and audience interaction. Three silent, blue-painted performers explore the world with childlike curiosity, turning ordinary objects into instruments and finding humor in everyday situations. There is very little spoken dialogue, making the show easy to enjoy without following a traditional story.

Music, Paint and Spectacle

Music is a major part of the production, with energetic drumming and unusual homemade instruments. Some of the show's signature sequences combine percussion with brightly colored paint, creating a visual spectacle synchronized with the music. Lighting, video, sound effects and multimedia add to the sensory experience.

Expect the Unexpected

Rather than telling a conventional story, Blue Man Group consists of interconnected sketches and musical sequences. Audience members may become part of the action, and the performers frequently break the fourth wall. The result is strange, funny, energetic and deliberately unpredictable.

Blue Man Group is very good for kids, especially roughly ages 5–12. It's highly visual, silly, interactive and doesn't depend much on dialogue

Origins in New York City

Blue Man Group was created by Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton, who began performing together in Manhattan in the late 1980s. Their experimental appearances combined performance art, comedy, music and unusual visual effects. The concept developed into a full theatrical production, opening Off-Broadway at the Astor Place Theatre in 1991. The New York production became a major attraction and remained at Astor Place for more than three decades before closing in February 2025.

Expanding Around the World

Following its New York success, Blue Man Group expanded to other cities. Long-running productions have played in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando and Berlin. The show has also toured extensively throughout North America and internationally, reaching audiences across Europe, Asia, Latin America and other regions.

An Evolving Production

Although the three silent blue characters have remained at the center of the show, Blue Man Group has continually updated its material. New technology, music, video and audience-participation sequences have been introduced while signature elements—including percussion, paint and unconventional instruments—have remained.

Beyond the Stage

Blue Man Group has also released albums, appeared on television and performed at major events. Cirque du Soleil acquired the company in 2017, bringing Blue Man Group into its international entertainment portfolio.
