Show Summary
First premiering on Broadway in 1973, this revival of the timeless musical Gigi comes to Broadway following a pre-Broadway run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.  Starring Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical, Spring Breakers), along with Tony Award winner Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza, Follies).  Additional cast includes Corey Cott (Newsies), Dee Hoty (Footloose, City of Angels), Howard McGillin (Sunday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden), and Steffanie Leigh (Mary Poppins). This musical with music by Frederick Loewe and book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner is based on the 1945 novel of the same name by Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette.

Originally based on the end-of-the-war 1944 French novel of the same name, which was later turned into a musical, Gigi tells the story of an 15 year old woman who is being groomed to pursue the courtesan lifestyle by her grandmother and aunt. Gigi is unhappy with the idea but ultimately acquiesces to her family’s wishes. Gigi’s close male friend, Gaston, is seen as a womanizer of sorts as he frequently has private rendezvous with a string of mistresses. As Gaston witnesses the transformation of Gigi’s maturity, he becomes conflicted when he falls in love with Gigi, yet struggles with the fact that he may have to abandon his mistress-dealing ways. The updated Broadway musical has been modernized for a 21st century audience. The producers have removed some of the eyebrow-raising debauchery that was seen in Gigi’s previous Broadway and movie incarnations. In this modern version, Gigi is now 18 years old (as opposed to the original 15) and Gaston is perceived to be around the same age.

Should You See Gigi On Broadway?

Gigi Broadway Show 2015
  What Is Gigi Like?
The original production on Broadway won the Tony Award for Best Score, which includes many timeless tunes including “Thank Heaven for Little Girls.” The story involves a young woman named Gigi who is living in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. As per her family tradition, she is destined to become a courtesan. However, she meets a bachelor named Gaston who guides her to becoming a very distinguished young lady. This is a revised version of the musical, adapted by Heidi Thomas, and directed by Eric D. Schaeffer (Million Dollar Quartet, Glory Days). The courtesan aspect of the story has been made much more subtle, if not completely surreptitious, making the show much more appropriate for most ages.

Is Gigi Good for Kids?

Yes, although it is recommended for those over the age of 10. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
