She Loves Me is based on a Hungarian play from 1937 called Parfumerie by Miklos Laszlo. She Loves Me is a touching and lovely musical that tells the story of two lonely shop workers in Budapest who work side by side and often fight, but then discover that they are each other’s secret pen pals. The film You’ve Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks was based off of this same story.

What's She Loves Me Like?

The show premiered on Broadway in 1963, when it was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical, but walked away with only one win for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.

The show is always a favorite with audiences, both in its two Broadway productions as well as its run in the West End and its regional productions. With the stellar casting of Zachary Levi and Laura Benanti, the musical is sure to be an extremely fun and beautiful production. Furthermore, Scott Ellis is very experienced with this material, having directed the 1993 Broadway revival, but he is reported to say he has learned a lot more about life since then, so this will be an even more well-conceived take than his previous rendition.

Is She Loves Me Good for Kids?

This musical is suitable for children of all ages, but is most recommended for children over the age of 8. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

She Loves Me on Broadway Background

She Loves Me is musical written by Tony Award winning playwright Joe Masteroff, a score by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. The show has since been revived one time before this production, in 1993 also produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company. This will be its second revival. The 1993 revival was also the first Broadway musical every produced by Roundabout, so this second revival is coming full circle for the company. Furthermore, both the 1993 revival and the 2016 revival are directed by Scott Ellis.

The musical stars Laura Benanti, whose previous Broadway credits include Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, In the Next Room, and Gypsy, for which she won a Tony Award for the role of Louise. Alongside Benanti stars Zachay Levi, who has previously been seen on Broadway in First Date and who is well known for his role on TV’s Chuck.
