What's Rhinoceros Like?
The Plot of Rhinoceros
Eugène Ionesco's absurdist comedy Rhinoceros follows a quiet French town where residents mysteriously begin transforming into rhinoceroses. As the bizarre epidemic spreads, everyday life descends into chaos, and conformity becomes increasingly irresistible.
Bérenger's Fight for Individuality
At the center is Bérenger, an ordinary, disillusioned man who watches friends, colleagues, and neighbors surrender their humanity. Even his closest friend, Jean, embraces the transformation.
A Satire of Society
As Bérenger becomes increasingly isolated, he struggles to resist the pressure to conform. Blending dark humor with political satire, Rhinoceros explores authoritarianism, mass hysteria, and the courage required to remain an individual.
Is Rhinoceros Good for Kids?
Not recommended for young children; best suited to teenagers and adults.

Eugène Ionesco's Rhinoceros premiered on November 1, 1959, at the Schauspielhaus in Düsseldorf, Germany, directed by Karl Heinz Stroux. The French premiere followed on January 25, 1960, at Paris's Odéon Theatre, starring Jean-Louis Barrault as Bérenger, William Sabatier as Jean, and Simone Valère as Daisy.
London Productions (1960)
The play reached London's Royal Court Theatre in April 1960, directed by Orson Welles. Laurence Olivier starred as Bérenger, alongside Joan Plowright as Daisy. The production transferred to the Strand Theatre in June, with Maggie Smith subsequently assuming the role of Daisy.
Original Broadway Production (1961)
Rhinoceros opened at Broadway's Longacre Theatre on January 9, 1961, directed by Joseph Anthony and produced by Leo Kerz. Eli Wallach played Bérenger, Zero Mostel portrayed Jean, and Anne Jackson starred as Daisy. Jean Stapleton also appeared in the cast.
Mostel won the 1961 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. The production concluded on August 5, 1961, before returning for a brief engagement from September 18–30.
