Honest and bitingly funny play about the hold our family has over us, and coming to terms with the scars we leave on each other.

Mother Play on Broadway Background

Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel (How I Learned to Drive) has written an unflinchingly honest and bitingly funny play about the hold our family has over us, and our coming to terms with the scars we leave on each other.

Mother Play Pushes Appropriate Out Of The Hayes Theatre

Mother Play follows Second Stage’s runway-hit Broadway production of Appropriate, which is a 2014 drama by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, also at the Hayes Theatre.

Appropriate will attempt the rare move to another another theatre to continue its run, as Mother Play would not move its production window at the Hayes. It is unclear if it was the schedule of the celebrities Jessica Lange or Jim Parsons that would not allow the extension.

What's Mother Play Like?

It’s 1962, just outside of D.C. and matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage children, Carl and Martha, as they move into a new apartment.

Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path.

Bolstered by gin and cigarettes, the family endures — or barely survives — the changing world around them.

Is Mother Play Good for Kids?

This show is appropriate for persons over the age of 16 years.
