Show Performed Off-Broadway in 2014 and In London in 2019

Appropriate previously ran off-Broadway in 2014 for 2 months. Its performance dates were Previews: Feb 25, 2014 • Opening: Mar 16, 2014 • Closing: Apr 13, 2014.

The show opened at the Donmar Warehouse in London August 22, 2019, following previews from August 16. It played a limited run to October 5, 2019.

Elle Fanning Made Her Broadway Debut

Emmy Award nominee Elle Fanning will make her Broadway debut with the production. Appropriate began performances on Nov. 29 2023 and officially opened at the Hayes Theatre on Dec. 18 2023. Fanning appeared alongside a previously reported cast that includes Natalie Gold, Alyssa Emily Marvin, Sarah Paulson and Corey Stoll.

Show Extends Due To Strong Sales

Due to strong ticket sales, Second Stage Theater’s production of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate, directed by Lila Neugebauer, has extended three weeks and will now run through Sunday, March 3, 2024.

The show started previews November 29th 2023, officially opened on Monday, December 18th, 2023 at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater (240 West 44th Street).

Rare Commercial Transfer For Non-Profit Show

Appropriate initially appeared on Broadway as a limited engagement at the not-for-profit Second Stage’s Hayes Theater. Ticket sales were strong and the show extended for an extra three weeks and was scheduled to close March 3rd, 2024. The producers then announced the play would extend again, but this time at a new theatre and in a commercial context as opposed to a non-profit.

Show Extending Again and Transferring to Belasco Theatre

The initial show will end at the Hayes Theater on March 3rd, 2024 and will then make a commercial transfer to the Belasco Theatre. The show in the new location is set to begin performances on March 25, 2024 and then continue performances through June 23, 2024.

Most of the Cast Moving With Show

The majority of the Broadway cast of the initial run (including the lead actor Sarah Paulson) are moving with the show. Elle Fanning will not reprise her performance as River for the transfer. This was Elle Fanning's first Broadway show and it was not well received. Fanning's role as River Rayner has been filled by Ella Beatty for the remainder of the run, who will also make her Broadway debut in the role.

Theatre Transfer Causes Ticket Confusion

With the show moving from one theatre to another, this means that the show must also switch the official ticketing partner - to the one that the new theatre landlord approves.

All tickets for Appropriate shows through March 3rd, 2024 must be purchased from 2nd Stage, which is the official ticketer for the Helen Hayes Theatre. All tickets for shows after March 25, 2024 must be purchased through Telecharge, which is the official ticketer for the Belasco Theatre.

It’s summer, the cicadas are singing, and the Lafayette family has returned to their late patriarch’s Arkansas home to deal with the remains of his estate. Toni, the eldest daughter, hopes they’ll spend the weekend remembering and reconnecting over their beloved father.

Suddenly, long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can’t be contained, and the family is forced to face the ghosts of their past.
