Falsettos is a moving and complex story about a man named Marvin, who leaves his wife Trina for a man named Whizzer. Falsettos first premiered on Broadway in 1992, with a book by William Finn and James Lapine, music and lyrics by William Finn, and directed by James Lapine. Under the able direction of the show’s original helmer and writer, James Lapine, the 2016 revival is sure to be a wonderful production.

Falsettos on Broadway Background

Finn is also the composer of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Lapine is the frequent Sondheim collaborator whose credits include the book and direction of Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Passion. He has also recently directed shows including the 2012 revival of Annie, and the 2010 revue Sondheim on Sondheim. Falsettos came to Broadway after originating as two one-act plays, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland, which both premiered at the Off-Broadway theatre Playwrights Horizons in 1981 and 1990, respectively. They were actually the second and third one-acts of a trio dealing with the same characters. At the time of the first one-act’s premiere, the artistic director of Playwrights Horizons was Andre Bishop, who now presides over Lincoln Center Theatre. Therefore, when the 2016 revival of Falsettos was having trouble raising its financing under the stewardship of Jordan Roth and Jujamcyn Theatres, they turned to Bishop and Lincoln Center to come on board and produce. He agreed, and this revival is produced by Lincoln Center Theater and Jujamcyn Theatres together at the Walter Kerr Theatre, a Jujamcyn-owned venue.

What’s Falsettos Like?

At the time of the show’s premiere, America was in the midst of the AIDS crisis, and there was significantly less acceptance of same-sex marriage. Therefore, it is interesting to consider the change of impact of this show, given the different political and social climate. In any case, the material is excellent; the show took home the 1992 Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, in addition to being nominated for Best Musical and many other awards. The choreographer is Spencer Liff, whose previous credits include the 2015 revival of Spring Awakening and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Is Falsettos Good for Kids?

Due to adult themes, the show is most appropriate for those over the age of 12. Children under the age of 4 will not be permitted in the theatre.
