Our Recommendation
Chaplin offers an interesting biographical sketch that touches on the screen legend's vaudeville days in London, his massive Hollywood success, and the controversial turn to politics that led to charges of communism. A scene that depicts young Charlie's first attempt to act on film, and a sequence that shows how he and his business manager brother Sydney make him one of the richest men in the movies are great glimpses into early Hollywood. But other things are glossed over, from his rise to stardom to his many marriages to unusually young women. Chaplin's strengths include its direction, set design, costuming (which sticks to shades of black and white to create a sense of period), and the use of film footage that is nicely integrated into the show at key points. The score by Christopher Curtis is not especially memorable, but it works well in the context of the show. The musical's greatest asset is the star-making performance of Rob McClure, who offers a fully-formed character, showing us Chaplin as a naive young showman who grows into a true artist. It's a wonderful performance and helps to make Chaplin well worth seeing, despite its flaws.
