Our Recommendation
There are moments of beauty in this revival of the Athol Fugard play The Road to Mecca, from the elderly artist Miss Helen's revelation of her deep fear of spiritual darkness to a lovely sequence in which dozens of candles are gradually lit to create a gorgeous stage picture. However, most of the first act moves slowly, featuring an often dull dialogue between the artist and a young visitor who has come to check on her. The second act, in which much of that dialogue finally pays off, is far superior, made all the better by the appearance of the charming Jim Dale as a neighbor who is both friend and foe to Miss Helen.
