Show Summary - The Boys in the Band

The Boys in the Band is a 1968 play by Mart Crowley, which arrives on Broadway for the first time, following a wait of 50 years after its Off-Broadway premiere. The play is elevated by an all-star cast who come together to make up a powerhouse ensemble of principally gay actors. The show stars Jim Parsons (An Act of God, Harvey, The Normal Heart, “The Big Bang Theory”), Zachary Quinto (The Glass Menagerie, Off-Broadway’s Angels in America, “American Horror Story”), Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon, Falsettos, “Girls,” “The New Normal”), and Matt Bomer (“The Normal Heart,” “AHS”), Robin De Jesús (Rent, Wicked, La Cage aux Folles), Brian Hutchison (Man and Boy, Looped, Exit the King), Michael Benjamin Washington (La Cage aux Folles, Mamma Mia!), and Tuc Watkins (Broadway debut).

To top it all off, the show’s director is Joe Mantello, two-Time Tony Award winner for Best Direction for Assassins and Take Me Out, and whose additional directing credits include countless works including An Act of God, Casa Valentina, Other Desert Cities, in addition to performing credits in such works as The Normal Heart.

This groundbreaking work about the experience of gay men in the late 1960s is as illuminating about the ways that things have changed, as it is about the ways that things have remained the same. The present revival is both shocking in terms of how much it still feels relevant, as well as refreshing in terms of how far we have come as a society.

Should You See The Boys in the Band On Broadway?

The Boys in the Band movie in 1970

What Is The Boys in the Band Like?

When The Boys in the Band began its original production in 1968, it intended to play just five performances at a tiny theatre, its enormously positive reception allowed it to transfer to a larger Off-Broadway theatre, where it played for over 1,000 performances. The show’s success also led to a film adaptation in 1970 directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist). This production is produced by David Stone (Wicked) along with veteran film and television producer Ryan Murphy, whose many credits include creating “Glee” and “Feud,” and directing HBO’s “The Normal Heart,” which starred Jim Parsons. With such a talented creative team, this all-star cast is destined to bring the audience to both laughter and tears. When the play was first written, it was revelatory in its depiction of the ways in which gay men treat each other and are made to feel about themselves. The present revival is still as relevant as ever.
