Show Summary - Prince of Broadway

Harold “Hal” Prince is one of the best known theatre directors and producers of the 20th century. In the 1950s, he produced such shows on Broadway as The Pajama Game (1954), Damn Yankees (1955), New Girl in Town (1957), West Side Story (1957), and Fiorello! (1959). In 1962, he had his first Broadway directing experience with A Family Affair, and followed that with future directorial endeavors such as She Loves Me, Baker Street, It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman, Cabaret, Company, Follies, and the list goes on. Harold Prince won a total of 21 Tony Awards to date, more than any one in history, including eight for directing, eight for producing the Best Musical of the year, two as Best Producer of a Musical (when that award existed), and three special awards. In 2006, he was given the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. Needless to say, Hal Prince is one of the Broadway greats, and it is only fitting that an entire Broadway show be designed in his honor. The new musical Prince of Broadway is a showcase of highlights from Prince’s expansive career, including re-imagined segments from many of the shows he has produced and/or directed. With a book by David Thompson (The Scottsboro Boys), the show has new orchestrations, connecting musical elements, and a finale song by Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Honeymoon in Vegas). This extraordinary show pays homage to Prince’s legacy, while showcasing his talent as he tackles the challenge of directing this production.
