The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway
The first production of The Phantom of the Opera opened at Her Majesty's Theatre on October 9, 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Awards include the Laurence Olivier and Evening Standard Award for Best Musical and seven Tony Awards. A movie version of The Phantom of the Opera was released in 2004, directed by Joel Schumacher. The spectacular Broadway production of Phantom opened in 1988 and was immediately a mammoth must-see hit. Not only has it been the first Broadway show for many a New York visitor, but The Phantom of the Opera is a musical that people love to experience again and again. In 2006, it became the longest running Broadway musical in history. |
