Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 3/23/2014

This weeks notable movements on Broadway are:

NEW SHOWS THIS WEEK
Three shows began previews on Broadway this week.  Act One played 4 performances at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre, with an average paid admission of $57.67 per ticket, and an average audience capacity of 61.07%.  Another not-for-profit theatre company was significantly more successful with their Broadway debut this week: the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of Cabaret had an average paid admission of $94.96 and an average capacity of 101.7%, more than selling out their house due to premium sales in its three first performances.  The third premiere this week is also off to a strong start: Of Mice and Men, benefitting from a star studded cast including James Franco, Chris O’Dowd, and Leighton Meester, attracted an average paid admission of $111.95, and filled its house to an average 95.6% capacity over the six performances of its first week.  Overall, these figures exemplify how household name actors and familiar show titles can succeed in attracting a full audience even before reviews are published.

A RAISIN IN THE SUN
A Raisin in the Sun made it into the millionaire’s club this week, a real accomplishment for a straight play on Broadway, especially so early on in its run.  With an average paid admission of $132.31 and a clean 100.00% audience capacity, this revival of the Lorraine Hansberry classic profited from the megastar status of its lead, Denzel Washington.  This is the third week in which this production has been running, but it is the first 8-performance week.  As such, it has done equally well this week compared to the prior week, which only had 7 performances.

THE REALISTIC JONESES
Another straight play in previews is The Realistic Joneses, which transferred to Broadway after an acclaimed run last year at the Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut.  Though Will Eno’s play features famous actors including Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts, and Marisa Tomei, their star power is significantly lower than that of Denzel Washington.  As such, in its first 8-performance week, the show played to only 81.38% average capacity, with an average ticket price of $76.34.

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 3/16/2014

This weeks notable movements on Broadway are:

MILLIONAIRES CLUB
With total Broadway ticket sales revenue up to $24.4 million from last weeks $21.2 million, this week sees that seven Broadway shows are now in the millionaires club. This includes Kinky Boots, Les Miserables, Matilda, Motown, Book Of Mormon, Lion King and Wicked. Les Miserables shines as the seventh top grossing show overall and it has only just opened in previews.

THE WICKEDLY TALENTED INDINA MENZEL IN IF/THEN
If/Then begins its run in previews with strong sales.  With almost a million ($) dollars in gross Broadway ticket sales, If/Then has made it to the top ten in our Broadway Show Ticket Analysis Chart (see below). The ‘wickedly talented’ Idina Menzel (not Adele Dazeem) seems to be the drive of this new Broadway show which is directly reflected from the average ticket price of $105.65 and a 98.55% capacity.

AFTER MIDNIGHT
With a rotating list of celebrity singers as the big draw for this show, the critically acclaimed After Midnight suffered greatly last week by being stuck in the no-mans-land between the end of KD Lang and start of Toni Braxton stints on the show. It’s unclear who actually sang in that role last week, but the numbers show that how the lack of celebrity draw can impact the sales numbers massively. The average paid admission sale crashed from $96.44 to $68.39, demonstrating that the celeb headliner can make a huge difference in sales. Ironically, the capacity for After Midnight remained the same indicating that the show discounted heavily and may have papered the theatre to get the audience in. It will be interesting to see how the show recovers this week when Toni Braxton makes her debut and whether or not the gap-drop in sales can mess with overall shows ticket sales momentum or if its just a passing phase. The show plans to rotate in Toni Braxton, KD Lang, Fantasia Barrino, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Dule Hill and Adriane Lenox. All of which will provide some fascinating takes on sales data as it may just end up being a popularity contest with all things equal.

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 3/09/2014

This weeks notable movements on Broadway are:

A RAISIN IN THE SUN OPENS IN PREVIEWS
Shot out of cannon is A Raisin In The Sun, which is only three performances in and already the sell-out show of the new season. Denzel Washington stars in this redo of the Broadway favorite which averaged $144.53 in its first three days of previews.

MOTHERS AND SONS
Tyne Daly in Mothers and Sons continues to draw audiences, but is upside down with 81% of seats sold, but with an average of only $45 per ticket price – putting it the bottom two shows on Broadway.

ROCK OF AGES
Following the close of Bronx Bombers and Machinal, Rock Of Ages has moved into the bottom three Broadway show slot, their first time at this position. Their average paid admission is up on last week though, so time will tell if this can be turned around with recent TV spots that were run on local New York TV stations.

JERSEY BOYS
The musical story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, helmed by Dodger Theatricals, that follows the rags-to-riches tale of four blue-collar kids working their way to stardom has struck a soft spot by only filling only 63.40% of their seats last week. It appears that their strategy is to keep their prices high and seats empty, which is a General Manager strategy that is likely to end with losses for investors. Once the darling of Broadway, Jersey Boys shows signs of wear and tear, by now finishing in the bottom ten position of all Broadway shows. This show may need a fresh management approach to reinvigorate ticket sales.

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 3/02/2014

DISNEY’S ALADDIN BEGINS PREVIEWSAladdin on Broadway
Aladdin began previews on February 26, 2014 with strong sales.  Already one of the top 10 grossing shows after only seven performances in five days, the Broadway comedy has already sold out in it’s first week in previews with 100% capacity at an average paid admission of $80.44.  The Broadway ticket price point seems a bit low for a Disney production showcasing music by Alan Menken in this Disney classic, but this may be due to the limited time pre-sale discount offers that were available in the beginning of January.  Aladdin fans definitely took advantage of the Broadway show discount while it lasted!

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 2/23/2014

ALL THE WAY BEGINS STRONG BUT NOT ALL THE WAY YET
All The Way began previews just two weeks ago and already made the top half spectrum of the Broadway Show Ticket Analysis Chart (see below) with the Broadway ticket gross of $726,190.  Not too shabby for a Broadway show that has not even opened yet but Broadway ticket sales may be affected by the star playing Lyndon B. Johnson, Breaking Bad’s Brian Cranston allowing the show to hold an average Broadway ticket price of $95.79.  Gross ticket sales may be high in relation to the other Broadway shows but average capacity of the Neil Simon Theatre was at a mere 66.64%. Achieving the gross potential for ticket sales will require the show to go All The Way!

MOTHERS AND SONS FEATURING TYNE DALY PREVIEWS
Mothers and Sons, featuring American stage/screen actress, Tyne Daly, began previews on February 23, 2014. Though it seems to be the lowest grossing show according to the Broadway Show Ticket Analysis chart below, it is only considering one performance. Next week’s sales should better indicate where the Broadway show stands in relation to the other Broadway shows.

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 2/16/2014

Twelfth NightBIG LEAP IN BROADWAY SALES
New York City keeps getting pummeled with snow and cold temperatures, but the freeze seems to be thawing at Broadway box offices. Total revenue increased considerably this week, with Broadway ticket sales jumping from last week’s $17,841,889 up to $21,192,762 this week.

SHAKESPEARE DOUBLE BILL CLOSES
Despite the Bard’s enduring popularity, it’s not often that Broadway productions of Shakespearean plays are certifiable hits, but the double bill of Richard III and Twelfth Night featuring Mark Rylance earned raves from critics and big bucks from audiences. Both plays closed this weekend, and enjoyed sold out performances and average ticket prices of $110.02 for their final week on Broadway.

ROCKY ENTERS THE BROADWAY RING
The brand new musical version of the classic Sylvester Stallone flick Rocky began preview performances on Broadway this week. Though it has yet to prove itself a box office champ, the boxing-themed show is off to a promising start, selling at 84.97% capacity with an average paid admission of $95.69.

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 2/9/2014

A Night with Janis JoplinBROADWAY TICKET SALES GO UP
Following a depressing Super Bowl Week low-point in overall Broadway revenue last week, ticket sales on the Great White Way have risen by more than a million dollars, increasing from $16,714,694 to $17,841,889. While the bump up is encouraing, New York City is still mired in the midst of a very cold, snowy winter, so it is too soon to get optimistic that Broadway sales will continue to rise.

A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN CONCLUDES BROADWAY RUN
At 74.01% theater capacity, the last night of A Night with Janis Joplin on Broadway wasn’t a standing-room only crowd, but the rollicking musical revue still went out with decent sales in its last week, bringing in $78.63 average paid admission. Though A Night with Janis Joplin is no longer on Broadway, producers have already announced their intention to find another venue for the rockin’, blues-infused musical.

The following are the Broadway ticket sales numbers for the week ending February 9, 2014:

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 2/2/2014

superbowl 48 trophySUPERBOWL GOES OFF LIKE A DAMP SQUIB
According to the Broadway League, the 2014 Superbowl 48 in New Jersey fails to ignite Broadway ticket sales in New York City and actually kept many Broadway fans away from New York city when compared to the last ten years of sales during the same week. New York City was busy with many Super Bowl fans milling around,  hotels completely sold out, many Super Bowl parties and the NFL awards were at Radio City Music Hall the night before the Super Bowl but very few of these visitors actually went to see a Broadway show – The demographic just didn’t fit and Broadway producers failed to sell the dream.

Broadway overall ticket sales plummeted by nearly two and a half million dollars, falling from $19,122,428 down to $16,714,694, which was a unexpected shock to many shows, but with little history on this kind of event it was hard one to predict.

BIG DROP IN BROADWAY TICKET SALES
Even top selling shows like The Lion King took a big hit from a 98.71% capacity just last week, capacity decreased 10% the week of the Super Bowl.Though there were plenty of tourists in town, apparently not enough football fans also have a love for Broadway. What may have taken an even bigger toll was that many locals decided to avoid the Times Square area entirely during the week leading up to the big game, when several blocks of Broadway were turned into an interactive Superbowl celebration.

BROADWAY TICKET SALES COMPARED TO LAST YEAR
We can see a similar decrease in Broadway tickets sales from the 2013 Super Bowl XLVII.  Last year, Broadway grossed a total of $16,564,313 in Broadway ticket sales with 22 shows running.  This year, Broadway grossed a total of $16,714,694 in Broadway ticket sales with 26 shows running. This is far less than expected considering there are an additional four Broadway shows this year. With the 2014 Super Bowl being at the Metlife Stadium, one would think the significant increase in the amount of tourists would help Broadway break free from this annual cycle; however, the numbers do not lie.  Maybe the Super Bowl Boulevard in Times Square (Broadway from 34th Street to 47th Street) occupied tourists during this time.

THE BOOK OF MORMON TOPS THE CHART
The highest-grossing show this week was The Book of Mormon, which, despite most of Broadway’s deep financial freeze this week, had no problem selling out and earning $1,641,717.  Wicked came in second with $1,403,247, followed by Disney’s The Lion King, rounding out third place with $1,293,167.  Kinky Boots was the only other Broadway show to make over a million, bringing in $1,173,857.

Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis w/e 1/26/2014

The Bridges of Madison CountyBROADWAY’S WEEKLY SALES DIP
Apparently New York City’s deep freeze temperatures have been keeping Broadway theater fans indoors. Overall Broadway ticket sales decreased by nearly a million this week, as revenue went from $20,091,732 down to $19,122,428. With any luck, the NY/NJ Superbowl festivities this coming week will give Broadway box offices a needed boost.

BEST-SELLING BOOK NOW A BROADWAY MUSICAL
The Bridges of Madison County, a huge-selling hit novel that later became a film starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, has been transformed into a romantic musical, which is now in previews on Broadway. Whether or not the title will be enough to draw in fans of the book remains to be seen, but so far the show is only doing modest business, filling the theater to 81.96% capacity with an average paid admission of $64.40.
