‘America’s Got Talent’ Faces Tough Time Filling Seats In NYC

For the May 2014 taping of season 9 of the NBC behemoth TV show, America’s Got Talent (AGT), Mariah Carey’s hubby, Nick Cannon and the various judges Howard Stern, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Mel B are certainly a big draw for audiences to see the show in NYC, but producers have created confusion in the choice of varied tape dates and locations for the taping’s, leading to a shortage of audience members.

For what’s billed as “Judgment Week “, normally the AGT show would be sold out, but right now there are many empty seats to be had over the next few days and many “priority seating” options are left empty, which is quite rare. The timings of the taping’s are also pretty awful with two taping’s a day at 9 AM and 2:15 PM maintaining a rigorous and demanding taping schedule. Many New Yorker’s just aren’t getting up for this. It is expected that in order to keep the morning audience there for the afternoon that they will feed them lunch as a bribe, a classic Hollywood trick.

The latest taping location is at Pier 92/94 on the West Side Highway, which is normally a  trade show and special event venue that houses the Westminster dog show and various other corporate trade shows. It’s weird to see AGT relegated to such a meager environment, especially given the high quality of the previous taping locations . Pier 92/94 bills itself in the “heart of midtown”, but in reality it is located on the outskirts of Midtown Manhattan at 55th Street and the West Side Highway, with no subway and little public transportation going there, that doesn’t help audience members who want to see the show, and have to battle rush-hour traffic to get there. No doubt the celebrities on the show, will be able to use Howard Stern’s “Ronnie Mund” AKA ” Ronnie the limo driver” to take them out there, in the quiet comfort of his customized Audi A8 complete with a working AC petcock.

AGT americas got talent show datesIt’s widely know that the reason AGT is shot in NYC is due to Howard Stern’s demanding schedule with The Howard Stern Show at Sirius XM radio so it remains to be seen if this format of moving around NYC in search of shooting locations will work over time or Howard will get bored and move onto new TV projects. It seems like just only a few moments ago the show was stationed in the theater at Madison Square Garden and before that it was at the Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark NJ. It is not clear where the live shows will be taped in the summer of 2014, but given the constant go-around NYC, it could be pretty much anywhere in the tri-state area.

What also doesn’t help is that the show isn’t on our TV screens right now, so there is little interest in the public minds – out of sight, out of mind. All the footage from these current shows is recorded and then edited down to the bare minimum, so the feel of this kind of show is labored and somewhat less compelling than a “Live” show, where it seems like anything could happen. Audiences in Hollywood would often be paid to attend these kinds of shows, but the New York ones have to be run more cheaply as the cost of shooting these shows in NYC is about double the Californian rate. The taped show also take a lot longer to shoot, often two and a half hours, with re-shoots and lighting adjustments galore,  which makes the audience restless and often bored. So bored  in fact that they don’t come back, especially given the amount of boos that Nick Cannon received recently at Madison Square Garden, when he came to see the NY Knicks play. His AGT TV producers thought it would be a great idea to shoot an AGT promo at the game and for him to appear on the MSG Jumbotron and then do a trick shot (Throwing the ball behind his head, while someone else throws a ball into the basket) His appearance on the Jumbotron was met with loud crowd boos and then his failed trick shot added to the crowd torment and they started getting mean. After a 2nd, but successful, attempt Nick Cannon finally sat down and then left the stadium just ten minutes later as he appears to have little interest in the Knicks. New Yorker’s generally do not like Nick Cannon and clearly Knicks fans positively dislike him, and now he knows it  if he didn’t know already. NBC’s AGT producers are well known producers of “fakeality” TV Shows and are to expected to still use the negative footage recorded at MSG, remove the loud boos, overdub the audio and edit out the fans rude hand gestures and make it appear that Mr Cannon was in fact the darling of The Garden.

We look forward to see the live shows of AGT come back to NYC in July and it will be interesting to see if the public interest in seeing this show returns, but given the current nomadic spin on shooting locations, the show could end up in Danbury, Connecticut. The home of all the other NBC universal shows. If only Howard Stern would agree to the move.

For your information, the official address of this shooting location at Pier 92/94 is 711 12th Avenue, New York, NY 10019.

America’s Got Talent Returns to Film in the NYC Area

America’s Got Talent, NBC’s #1 summertime smash hit, broke big news and new ground yesterday, announcing that the show’s exciting second round of competition will film in front of a live TV audience at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden from April 3 through April 6, 2014.

America's Got Talent with Howard Stern, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B. ,Howie Mandell

Complimentary VIP and regular tickets are still available in limited quantities to the general public via NBC’s website.  These tickets are expected to go pretty quickly, however, as metro area AGT fans are eager to bear historical witness as the remaining contestants audition live, right before their very eyes and those of the make-or-break ‘em celebrity judges, in order to secure the highly-coveted final spots in the upcoming season.

The ninth summer incarnation of this blockbuster variety show is expected to be even more riveting than ever before.  From October last through February, our great country was crisscrossed and fine-tooth combed for dynamic personalities and wholly unique skill sets.  Contestants were talent-scouted during open call auditions in 11 U.S. cities as big, small and diverse as Atlanta, Baltimore, Denver, Greensboro, Houston, Indianapolis, L.A. Miami, Nashville, New York and Providence, which only strengthens the stance that AGT truly is an equal-opportunity opportunity-provider, open to anyone of “any age” with “any talent” and “any dream” from anywhere.

This democratic philosophy prophetically proved true in 2012, when AGT co-creator, the nefarious Simon Cowell of American Idol notoriety, in conjunction with top NBC execs, made the big, bold decision to relocate his six-year-old show from its left coast locale in Burbank, CA to the greater NY metropolitan area.  The big wigs believed that in addition to doing season seven’s newly acquired judge and shock jock extraordinaire, Howard Stern, a large logistical favor, the move would favor the show, as well, infusing it with an inevitably edgy New York feel and attitude, and rewarding its long-standing East Coast fans with their rightful piece of the live action.

And they were correct on all accounts.  Last summer’s broadcast from New York’s Radio City Music Hall proved a rousing ratings success.  And Howard Stern, who has since vocalized his appreciation for the geographical accommodations, decided in an on-air radio announcement last November, to return to the show for “one more season” and keep the fab five, which includes handsome host Nick Cannon, ever-affable Howie Mandell of Deal or No Deal fame, supermodel Heidi Klum of Victoria’s Secret reverence, and newest cool kid in the clubhouse, former Spice Girl, Mel B., alive for another round of spectacular theatricality.

The two-hour season premiere of NBC’s America’s Got Talent is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 8/7c and will feature scenes from the shows shot at the show dates listed above.

Robin Quivers New York TV Show Idea Finally Canned Following Cancer Scare

Robin Quivers is an American radio personality and actress best known for her longtime role as co-host and anchor since 1981 of The Howard Stern Show, which is now exclusive to Sirius XM Radio.  She published an autobiography entitled Quivers: A Life in 1995.  In 2004, Robin signed a television deal with Sony Entertainment to host her own talk show.  The show was set to premiere in the fall of 2006.  However, in March 2006, the idea was shelved, reportedly due to over congestion in the celebrity talk show market.  In 2012, she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, and provided commentary for The Howard Stern Show from her home in New York while she underwent surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.  After this arduous battle, at age 61, the plans for her television show have ofrobin quiversficially been dismissed.

Quivers is known for her trademark cackling laugh, as well as her controversial personality.  She has often publicly discussed how her father molested her at a young age.  In her second week on The Howard Stern Show in January 2006, she admitted to having once used vegetables and meats to pleasure herself.  She has a feisty rapport with Howard Stern; for instance, she once bet him $1 million that he would marry again, which he promised to pay her if he did.  She is very open about the fact she is unable to commit emotionally to her long-term partner, to whom she only refers as “Mr. X.”  Furthermore, she has exhibited volatile patterns with weight loss, having once lost 60 pounds in just eight weeks, which almost led to her demise.  Ironically, perhaps, she has served to promote the Master Cleanse weight loss technique.

Her extraordinary rise to fame began in a lower middle class neighborhood in Baltimore, growing up with two parents who only had seventh grade educations.  Her father worked for Bethlehem Steel, and her mother was a homemaker.  She then joined the military, climbing the ranks of the United States Air Force from Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant to Captain, before she was honorably discharged and began her radio career.  After attending the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland, she worked at two radio stations in Pennsylvania, and then returned to Baltimore to serve as a consumer news reporter.  When she heard that Howard Stern was looking for someone to riff with, she jumped on the opportunity, and the two have been co-conspirators ever since. howard stern robin quivers

Quivers’ cancer scare did not sway Howard Stern’s devotion to her.  He stated that, if he ever lost her as a partner, he would quit radio.  At this point, she still participates in the radio show, but her poor health has determined that her longtime dream of hosting her own television show has become a lost opportunity.  It is unclear, however, if her talk show would have been successful.  Though she could have used her radio slot to promote her T.V. show, the demographic is completely off.  The primary demographic for The Howard Stern Show is single adult males, aged 28 to 54.  Daytime television, on the other hand, mostly attracts married women between the ages of 25 and 35, a demo that Robin has failed to reach despite her illustrious career.
