The Addams Family, a new musical based on the famed cartoons by Charles Addams, starts performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater on Broadway today. The show had a try-out in Chicago in late 2009 and brought in director Jerry Zaks to sharpen up the production. Is The Addams Family now ready to face Broadway? Audiences will decide tonight, and critics will decide on April 8, when the creepy and kooky musical has its official Broadway opening. The Addams Family stars Nathan Lane (The Producers) and Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago) as Gomez and Morticia Addams, Kevin Chamberlin as Uncle Fester, and Jackie Hoffman as Grandma, all members of a ghoulish but loving family of misfits who live in a haunted mansion. The musical has a book by Jersey Boys writers Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman and an original score by Andrew Lippa (Off-Broadway’s The Wild Party).
The incomparable “New Yorker” cartoonist Charles Addams is having a moment, with an exhibit that opened yesterday at New York’s Museum of the City of New York (1220 Fifth Avenue; 212 534-1672) and a Broadway show of “The Addams Family” opening on Broadway next week.
The MCNY exhibition focuses on Addams’ New York cityscapes, with his particular weird, dark, ironic commentary on the world around him.
Pencil sketches, watercolors, “New Yorker” covers and completed cartoons are all included in the exhibit, which runs though May 16.
No aspect of New York City life escaped Addams’ pen or his observant eye, from subways and buses to department stores and parks. A number of workshops, lectures and screenings will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition, including a gallery tour this Sunday, March 7 at 3 pm.
One section of the exhibit is dedicated to Addams’ most famous creations: The Addams Family, stars not only of the page but also, of course, of a much-loved TV show, two big-screen movies, and the upcoming musical.
And speaking of the musical…starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, previews of the musical begin on Monday at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater (205 West 46th Street; 877-250-2929) with the official opening on April 8.
Addams himself had an output that spanned almost 60 years and contained, by some estimations, several thousand works. Interestingly, The Addams Family characters actually appear in only about 50 original works.
Addams’ work is best known for combining the macabre and the mundane, the creepy and the delightful–much like life.
The official casting announcement for the new Broadway musical version of The Addams Family has finally come out. As expected, Nathan Lane (currently on Broadway in Waiting For Godot) and Bebe Neuwirth (Broadway’s Chicago, TV’s Frasier) will star as Gomez and Morticia Addams. Kevin Chamberlain (Seussical) will play Uncle Fester, Jackie Hoffman (Xanadu, Hairspray) is Grandmama, and Tony Award nominees and Broadway regulars Terrence Mann and Carolee Carmello will play supporting roles. Based on the famous cartoons by Charles Addams, The Addams Family musical is written by Jersey Boys librettists Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman, and composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa. The show is directed and designed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, the men behind the macabre musical Shockheaded Peter. The Addams Family will have its world premiere at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre in Chicago this November before opening on Broadway in March 2010.
They’re creepy and they’re kooky, and soon they’ll be on Broadway! Charles Addams’ spooky cartoon family are going to become the subject of their own musical, which will have a book by Jersey Boys scribes Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and a score by Andrew Lippa. Although Lippa wrote a few songs for another cartoon musical (the Broadway revival of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown), none of them seem like obvious choices. But no doubt director/designers Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, the masterminds behind the super eerie Shockheaded Peter, will provide the darkly comic sensibility that the Addams Family requires. Currently the show is expected to arrive on Broadway during the 2009-2010 season.
