Total Request Live, or TRL, is an hour long daily show broadcast live from MTV's studios in the heart of time square hosted by a rotating group of VJ's. TRL brings the hottest music and biggest celebrities to the 12-18 television audience.
Each day TRL counts down the 10 most requested videos in the country, as chosen by fans who vote online. Additional videos are shown in various segments such as on deck which highlights 5 videos just outside of the countdown and pre-RL which shows videos from new lesser-known artists.
TRL's celebrity guests range from actors such as Will Smith and Tom Cruise to musicians such as Eminem and Kelly Clarkson. The TRL studio at MTV is quite small so the audience gets to surround and interact with the guests which makes the TV Show a unique and personal experience. As the limited tickets for this MTV show are so coveted, TRL attempts to engage its viewers at home by allowing them to call into speak with celebrity guests and win prizes on air. Additionally, when the limited budget allows, TRL sends VJ's and fans to various locations around the world to visit movie sets, cover concerts and premiers, and attend events such as spring break and the MTV Music Video Awards.
Carson Daly, who began the show back in July 1998 says that nobody expected his former show, MTV's "Total Request Live" ("TRL" to its fans), to become the blockbuster success that it has. "It's like a giant musical youth hostel that's out of control, and I'm like the gatekeeper and the warden all in one," Daly observes in amazement. Since its debut, "TRL" has become entertainment's town square to its fans. They stand on the street outside its midtown Manhattan studios for hours, cheering on todays'the VJ and their guests. They make phone calls and send e-mail and instant messages, voting for their favorite hits. And, above all, they watch -- something not ignored by record labels, movie studios, and advertising agencies. An appearance on "TRL" can make or break a name.
Since it launched on MTV in the States in 1998, TRL has become a nationwide phenomenon, capable of propelling pop stars to the top of the US charts. Want to know how important the show is? Just ask Britney Spears, whose debut single 'Baby One More Time' was premiered on the show, and who has been a firm TRL favourite ever since. TRL is filmed live in MTV's glass walled Times Square headquarters in New York City and sees the world's hottest stars pay visits as a vital part of their promotional itinerary. The show features more mega stars than you could shake a Prada freebie at. There really is no television show with an equivalent number of A list showbiz guests. The streets around the Times Square studios regularly grind to a halt thanks to the arrival of a major star at TRL - much to the annoyance of hundreds of irate yellow taxi cab drivers! When the Backstreet Boys appeared on the show, the police had to shut a staggering six blocks for the crowds!
