The Jerry Springer TV Show debuted on September 30, 1991 as a replacement for the Phil Donahue Show (The Grandaddy of the modern TV Talk show) , that had recently got cut.. Jerr's showt started as a political TV talk show, but quickly morphed into a low road production when they started getting better ratings when they covered low-brow content. On the eraly format show guests included Oliver North and Jesse Jackson. The show became more and more successful as it became more and more lowbrow, with an emphasis on infidelity, lewdnesses and sex. Its guests were typically blue collar people, with a special love for trailer trash, confronted on a television stage with a spouse or family member's adultery, homosexuality, prostitution, transvestism, hate group membership, or other controversial situations. These confrontations often lead to shouting, profanities, chair-throwing, fist-fights, and removal of clothing.
By 1998, The Jerry Springer show was beating the "other" Chicagoan Oprah Winfrey. With many and lawsuits and other contreversies the Jerry Springer Show prevailed.
In the same year Jerry Springer portrayed his own talk show host character in the movie Ringmaster though his character's name is Jerry Farrelly. Ringmaster offers a behind-the-scenes look at would-be guests who apply to a Springer-like show. The same year, Springer also released an unrelated autobiography named Ringmaster, he claimed "I can only think of one title a year"
In 2005 a British version was created and Jerry beat its UK talk-show rival Trisha Goddard five to one in the ratings, even though its format was more comedy than the reality of its Chicagoan brother
To this day the Jerry Springer show continues to tape regularly in Chicago and still achieves good ratings in each of its markets.
