The Length Of The Lines At The Booth

The Times Square Broadway TKTS ticket booth gets busy an hour before it opens and the lines can be quite long. You should make sure you allow for enough time. There are twelve counters at the booth, but TDF does not have enough people to man all the counters, so six or seven counters are normally open.

The Times Square booth also has a ticket line for "Plays only" which can be significantly shorter. Just make sure you are in the correct line if you want to purchase tickets to a play.

Ticket Payment Options

Up to only very recently, the Times Square TKTS ticket booth would only take cash for ticket sales. Everything changed following the robbery at the ticket booth in 2001, where $2.1 Million was stolen during a broad-daylight raid and the thieves were never caught. Now, for its own protection, the TKTS booth in Times Square accepts all forms of payment, including:

- Cash
- All Major Credit Cards
- TDF Gift Certificates
- Travelers Checks
- Bitcoin

Buying Tickets At The Booth

There is a purchase limit of six tickets per person at the TKTS booth. If you need more, don't worry! Just have more than one person with you.

Patron Services Representatives are wearing red shirts at the booth and will assist you in getting additional tickets if you still don't have enough people. The patron Services team are constantly trying to weed out ticket brokers from buying all the best tickets up and selling the tickets back to people near the back of the line.

TKTS 7-Day Fast Pass

The TDF TKTS Fast Pass allows TKTS patrons to return to the Times Square ticket booth within 7 days of their TKTS purchase and walk right up to window #1 with their TKTS ticket stub, thereby avoiding the longer lines at peak hours!

Everyone who purchases a ticket at the booth is given a fast-pass by default. Often the line for Fast-pass is not very fast, as many other ticket buyers are trying to use it too.

Hawkers, Pitchers and Other Distractions at The Booth

The line at the TKTS booth in Times Square has traditionally been a location where visitors have been pitched all kinds of deals and offers while they wait in line to buy tickets. Stories of fake, stolen or scam tickets have been circulated by TDF, but none have ever panned out to be real problems. Most Broadway ticket scams nowadays are internet based, usually from Craigslist. Most people who are trying to resell their Broadway tickets at face value at the TKTS line are usually fine with taking a picture with you and thus have a great deal more credibility.

Public Transportation:

You can get to the ticket booth in the following ways:

By Subway: The subway lines 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, S all stop at the Times Square station, which is close to the TKTS ticket booth.
By Bus: Crosstown buses M42 and M50 both stop on West 42nd Street
By Cab: It is not recommended to take a cab to Times Square due to heavy traffic and pedestrianization. It is better to take a cab to the North, South, East and West points of Times Square and not enter any of the intersections.

Broadway Ticket Booth History
1894 - 1938

The Theatre Development Fund (TDF) wasn't the first entity to put a discount Broadway ticket booth in Times Square. It all started with Joe LeBlang's Central and Public Service Ticket outlet that provided discounted Broadway tickets to the masses from 1894-1938. The street level office was located at 43rd and Broadway, at Gray's drug store and would go on to do $2 million dollars a year in revenue. The business survived Le Blang's sudden death in 1931 and continued it's discount ticket model until 1938, when it was ultimately sold to the Golden Leblang ticket broker. The ticket office was then closed and the Fitzgerald Building (Along with George M Cohan's Theatre) was demolished . The site was replaced with the tawdry Condé Nast Building, now named 4 Times Square featuring the Nasdaq Marketsite LED screens.

TKTS Booth History
1972 - 2002

In the spirit of LeBlang's discount Broadway ticket model, the first incarnation of the new TKTS booth location was a temporary structure built in Times Square in 1972, some thirty four years after LeBlang's CVPS ticket outlet closed.

The location of this booth was at junction of 47th and Broadway, on the empty space between the roads, four blocks North of LeBlang's original location, that had been torn down in 1938.

The Theatre Development Fund's (TDF) TKTS model copied LeBlang's exactly, but found new vigor with an audience who had never seen this phenomenon before. This renewed interest ignited Broadway attendance and provided revenue to struggling New York theatre.

TKTS Booth History
2008 - Current

The long term 'temporary' TKTS location in Times Square was finally closed down in 2002,and temporarily moved to the raw space underneath the Minskoff Theatre. Construction began on the new booth in Times Square in its place.

After many false construction starts, project problems and city variance issues the new TKTS ticket booth opened in 2008 to great fanfare.

The new Times Square location for the TKTS booth now serves over 500,000 visitors a year and the red steps are a favorite amongst visitors and locals alike. Discounts on tickets range from 50% to 30% and this location sees a brisk trade, rain or shine.

Times square is often a nightmare for vehicles as traffic is always very heavy, pedestrians abound and many of the approaches to Times Square are blocked or pedestrianized. Very few parking lots exist in this area and then ones that do, are very expensive. The best plan is to park a few blocks away, either further East or further West and walk in a couple of blocks.
