McCormick & Schmick’s New York City RestaurantWhile not usually an enormous fan of the American chain-restaurant, I am a huge fan of fresh seafood and while meandering in midtown recently, I came upon a rarity in Manhattan; I found the perfect combo. McCormick & Schmick’s is a popular national seafood chain located everywhere from Beaverton to Boston. There are a plethora of them in the Northeast, but this marks its first Manhattan location. I arrived in time for happy hour which actually made me ecstatic. As I sat down at the bar with a cocktail, I ordered up half a dozen “half-buck half-shells.” Monday-Friday from 3:30pm-6:00pm at the bar area with a two drink minimum, they have a $1.95 menu where not only are they serving up fish cakes and steamed mussels at that absurd price, but oysters and littleneck clams are fifty cents each! What could be more perfect for a post-matinee snack. In addition to this unbelievable deal, they also have a great coconut shrimp appetizer that we didn’t anticipate being as good as it was. Five enormous crispy shrimp appeared with a mango salsa and a horseradish marmalade ($8,60). Other enticing things we gladly inhaled were the Ahi tuna appetizer ($12.95) and the Costa Rican Red Talapia coated in crushed cashews with rum butter ($23.90). New menus are printed daily with a list of all the available fresh seafood which can be simply grilled if preferred and range in price from $16-$25, plus lunch-time values can’t be beat as the seafood portions are the same as dinner but range in price from $10-$20.
