When hunting down the best pizza in midtown, I decided to ask a few native Manhattanites where they would dine on pizza en route to the theater. While a handful of places were tossed at me, the one place that came up consistently was Don Giovanni’s. This little open-air Italian restaurant specializes in brick oven pizzas though they have a full Italian menu. The light-filled main room seats about 75 people comfortably and trust me, you’ll want to be comfortable when you sit down to a pie here. Their classic Margherita pizza has a thin crisp crust that isn’t too thin- it can hold the oozing melted cheese and subtle tomato sauce perfectly. Don Giovanni’s offers a lengthy list of fancy pies to choose from- everything from the white clam pizza to the Hawaiian pie covered in fresh ham and pineapple. All pizza pies can be made in small which feeds one very hungry person (average price $10.95) or large (average price $18.95) which can feed 2-3. We also recommend getting their Portobello mushroom appetizer ($7.95), marinated in aged balsamic vinegar. It was by far one of the best we have had. Salads are doled out generously and range from $6-$10 and the fresh crispy calamari ($7.95) is also not a bad way to whet your appetite, and there’s enough in the starter portion to share it. They offer a decent selection of bottled wines (most under $22) with a great half carafe of house wine at a reasonable $14 and bottled beers starting at $4.25- a steal in that ‘hood. The staff was extremely helpful offering suggestions but only when asked. Outside tables are available for spring and summer dining. Pizza will never be the same again.
