33 Variations on Broadway
Jane Fonda returns to Broadway in the Tectonic Theatre Project's production of 33 VARIATIONS, a new play by Moises Kaufman. The Tectonic Theater Project, under the leadership of Kaufman, is the award winning theater company that created acclaimed theater pieces The Laramie Project and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde.
Jane Fonda's most recent appearance on Broadway was over 45 years ago in the drama Strange Interlude. She made her debut on the Great White Way in There Was a Little Girl, which earned her a Tony nod for Best Featured Actress. The Oscar and Emmy-winning Fonda is excited to be returning to Broadway in 33 VARIATIONS: "I can't wait to get back on stage!"

33 Variations is currently playing at the following Broadway Theatre:
33 Variations, which features a live pianist, tells the story of Ludwig van Beethoven's fascination with a seemingly trivial little waltz, and the present-day musicologist Katherine Brandt (played by Jane Fonda) who labors to understand the root of the composer's obsession. Through her attempt to reach back into history and find the secrets hidden in his music, Katherine not only discovers the true nature of Beethoven's gift, but also finally embraces the beauty and legacy of her own life.

Summary Jane Fonda is a musicologist obsessed by a mystery surrounding Ludwig van Beethoven and one of his compositions. Drama, memory, and music combine to transport the audience from present-day New York to 19th-century Austria in this new Broadway play about passion, parenthood and the moments of beauty that can transform a life.
Our Recommendation Jane Fonda's return to Broadway (after a more than 40-year absence) is, deservedly, the major selling point of 33 Variations, but as luck would have it, she's matched by an equally fine cast. Moises Kaufman has written a touching and funny and sad play, and he has served it well as a director too, staging the piano-accompanied drama with grace and beauty.
