Our Recommendation Powerhouse Broadway singer Norm Lewis and Tony winner Audra McDonald are marvelous in the title roles in this streamlined production of the 1935 Gershwin folk opera. Purists have balked heavily at changes made to this Broadway adaptation, but anyone with two working ears will appreciate the stunning score, including the passionate "Bess, You Is My Woman," the charming "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'", and the humorous "It Ain't Necessarily So," not to mention the classic lullaby "Summertime". All these decades later, Gershwin's music still sounds modern and daring, and the story itself is a gripping melodrama that carries great emotional impact.
