Summary A kind of modern-day Pied Piper, former daredevil Johnny Byron is in danger of being evicted from his trailer in the woods, he is surrounded by friends and hangers-on who enjoy his drug and alcohol supply, and he has a neglected son who only wants to be taken to the county fair.
Age May be inappropriate for 14 and under. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Our Recommendation This is a very English play, both on the surface level (e.g. accents, slang, British cultural references) and on a much deeper level (references and symbolism that conjures images of olde England and its mythology). However, people from almost any country can appreciate its theme of how modernity has marginalized the natural world and its inhabitants. Already an established outsider, Johnny (played by Mark Rylance with bravado, passion, and pathos) finds that society will no longer even allow him that status, as the county kicks him out of his trailer in the woods.
