Our Recommendation Revered by many fans of Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the stunning score of this 1971 musical, Follies has always been considered to have a problematic book with its dreary characters and lack of action. Directed by Eric Schaeffer and featuring a marvelous cast headed by Bernadette Peters, Danny Burstein, Ron Raines, and Jan Maxwell, this production manages to transcend most of the show's flaws by playing to its strengths. The score is realized with a lush 28-piece orchestra, and the physical production has the much-needed glitz and ghostly touches that give Follies its 'wow' factor and its potent sense of nostalgia. Even better, this production and its actors succeed in giving the drama the emotional resonance that was sorely missing from the often-maligned 2001 Roundabout Theatre Company revival.
