Summary Based on celebrated director Pedro Almodovar's movie Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, this new musical by the creative team behind Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is about a woman who falls into a series of complications when she tries to discover the reason that her lover has left her.
Age May be inappropriate for 14 and under. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Our Recommendation The cast (Patti Lupone, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Sherie Rene Scott, Laura Benanti, Danny Burstein, and Justin Guarini, to name a few) is stupendous, the creative team is solid (The Full Monty's David Yazbek penned the score), Barlett Sher (South Pacific) is at the helm, and of course Almodovar's films are revered, so this should be a great show. Unfortunately, despite so many good ingredients, including some nice songs and clever staging by Sher, this new musical never quite gels. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is a farce, but this production never maintains the mania and humor needed in a farce. Part of the problem could be that the score is laden with ballads, which slow things down (the highlight of the show is easily Benanti's fast-paced number "Model Behavior," a moment when the show finally gets things right). Women on the Verge has its merits, but is ultimately a disappointment.
