Promises, Promises on Broadway
Kristin Chenoweth, the original star of Broadway's Wicked and recent Emmy winner for the TV show Pushing Daisies, returns to Broadway in a revival of the musical Promises, Promises. Her co-star is Sean Hayes (of Will & Grace fame), who was most recently seen onstage in New York in the Encores! production of Damn Yankees.
Written by Neil Simon, Burt Bacharach, and Hal David, Promises, Promises is based on the classic Billy Wilder film The Apartment, which tells the story of a junior executive (Hayes) who lets the higher-ups use his apartment for their love affairs. To his unhappy surprise, though, it's not long before his own would-be sweetheart (Chenoweth) shows up there with an exec.

Summary In this 1968 Broadway musical version of the Jack Lemmon movie The Apartment, an ambitious office peon (Will & Grace's Sean Hayes) starts lending his apartment to corporate big shots for their extramarital affairs, but soon regrets it when one of them shows up with the woman (Kristin Chenoweth) who he cares about most.
Age Tweens and Up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Our Recommendation In his Broadway debut, Sean Hayes is marvelous as Chuck, a nice guy who risks his integrity to climb the corporate ladder. Co-star Chenoweth has a harder time in the difficult role of Fran, a woman who spends most of the show feeling ambivalent about her choice to have an affair with Chuck's married boss. However, late in the show, when the two share a moment singing the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic "What Do You Get When You Fall In Love?" the stage lights up. Director/choreographer Rob Ashford helps smooth out some of the creakier aspects of Neil Simon's frequently funny script, and Katie Finneran gives a star turn at the top of the 2nd act as a lush that Chuck picks up at a bar.
