Downtown Hotels in NYC

Hotels in Downtown New York City
Downtown hotels located in the Greenwich Village, West Village, East Village, Soho, Little Italy, and Lower East Side neighborhoods of New York City

Bleeker Street in Greenwich VillageThe downtown area in New York City is comprised of Greenwich Village, East Village, Soho, Little Italy, and Lower East Side neighborhoods. These neighborhoods in New York City are mixed with residential and commercial areas, and are popular spots for shopping, eating out, and of course downtown hotels. Downtown Manhattan is also known for its bohemian and alternative culture, with funky coffee shops, theaters, and for the many musicians to have emerged from here, like Bob Dylan. Fantastic night life can also be found among downtown hotels in New York City.

Greenwich Village (aka The West Village) hotels are close to New York University, The New School, Cooper Union, and Washington Square Park, a New York City landmark and the heart of Greenwich Village. The West Village is part of Greenwich Village, a residential area and home to a number of bars, restaurants, hotels, and shops. The Village Halloween Parade travels through Greenwich Village in downtown New York City, and the oldest off-Broadway theater can be found here, Cherry Lane Theatre. Housing in Greenwich Village has grown expensive, forcing artists out and becoming a popular neighborhood for the wealthy to move in.

The East Village has several smaller neighborhoods within it: The Bowery, Alphabet City, and Stuyvesant Town. Also succumbing to gentrification, the East Village is known for having artists, hippies, and punks as residents and as the site of artistic movements over the years. Places to visit near East Village hotels in New York City include Tompkins Square Park, the site of where CBGB music club was (and is still preserved in a John Varvatos store), St. Mark’s Place, Bowery Ballroom, and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

Soho is named for being the downtown neighborhood “south of Houston (Street),” Soho hotels are among 19th century cast-iron architecture with large-windowed buildings and plenty of trendy shops along Broadway, which runs down its center, and on the streets beyond. Tables are set up along sidewalks in Soho with people selling their art and homemade jewelry. This area has many lofts, cobblestone streets, galleries, and is a tourist destination for expensive boutiques and a taste of the “real” New York City away from Times Square.

Little Italy
is home to a large population of Italians, though many have left downtown New York City due to rising housing costs. A portion of the neighborhood that lost its Italian residents and character has since become known as Nolita, leaving Little Italy fairly small. Little Italy hotels are among its famous Italian restaurants, pasta stores, and bakeries. The Feast of San Gennaro is an 11-day religious street festival that occurs every September celebrating Italian heritage, culture, and food.

The Lower East Side used to be an immigrant-populated working class area in New York City, though its tenement buildings and Jewish culture have endured. Examples of this include attractions near Lower East Side hotels, like the Jewish kosher style delicatessen Katz’s Deli, famous pickle vendor Guss’ Pickles, the oldest bialy bakery Kossar’s Bialys, as well as a number of synagogues.
