Show Summary - War Paint on Broadway
War Paint is a new musical that comes to Broadway after a record-breaking run at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. This is the newest show from the producers of Wicked, David Stone and Marc Platt. The musical tells the story of two competing cosmetics empires in the first half of the 20th century and the glass ceilings shattered by the female entrepreneurs Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstein. The musical has a book by Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife, Grey Gardens, The Little Mermaid), with music by Scott Frankel (Grey Gardens) and lyrics by Michael Korie (Grey Gardens, Doctor Zhivago). The show is directed by Michael Greif (Rent, Dear Evan Hansen, If/Then, Next to Normal, Grey Gardens) and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli (The King and I, Newsies, South Pacific, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). The cast features some of the most celebrated performers on Broadway, including Christine Ebersole (Grey Gardens, Steel Magnolias, Blithe Spirit, 42nd Street) as Elizabeth Arden, Patti LuPone (The Anarchist, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd) as Helena Rubenstein, John Dossett (Pippin, Newsies, The Constant Wife) as Tommy Lewis, and Douglas Sills (Living on Love, Little Shop of Horrors) as Harry Fleming.

Should You See War Paint On Broadway?

Doug Wright Playwright
  What Is War Paint Like?
This show tells the story of the rivalry between two female entrepreneurs in the first half of the 20th century. It is based on a true story, as well as the 2004 book War Paint by Lindy Woodhead and the 2007 documentary film The Powder & the Glory by Ann Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman. When the musical premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, it became the highest grossing show in the company’s history. The story is both inspiring and edifying, as both of these women came from humble backgrounds and created an entire industry through their fierce drive to succeed in a world otherwise run by men. In addition to their individual prowess, their constant rivalry led each woman to continually strive for greater heights, lending the material for a brilliant story for this musical. With an original score by Scott Frankel and Michael Korie, the show has the makings of a fascinating new work of theatre.

Is War Paint Good for Kids?

The show is most appropriate for children over the age of 8. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
