Show Summary - Smokey Joe's Cafe
The longest running musical revue in Broadway history, Smokey Joe’s Café first premiered on Broadway in February 1995, running for over 2,000 performances until its final show on January 16, 2000. The show includes 39 pop standards, including many rock and roll and R&B hits by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.  Some of these best known hits include “On Broadway,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Stand By Me,” “Love Potion #9,” “Hound Dog,” “Searchin’,” “Kansas City,” “I’m a Woman,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Poison Ivy.”  For the first time, Smokey Joe’s Café is being revived on Broadway in a production directed by Jerry Zaks, who also directed the original 1995 production, as well as other shows including Sister Act, Losing Louie, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, and the 2004 production of La Cage aux Folles. The choreographer of this revival is Warren Carlyle, whose credits include On the Twentieth Century, After Midnight, and A Christmas Story the Musical. The original production was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical for Jerry Zaks. Smokey Joe's Cafe (1995) received skeptical reviews from critics, who were not sure how the show was intended to survive without a unifying theme or structure. However, the show won a Grammy Award in 1996 for Best Musical Show Album. This revival is also produced by those who produced the premiere production: Richard Frankel, Steve Baruch, Tom Viertel and Marc Routh.

What Is Smokey Joe's Cafe Like?
Predating jukebox musical shows linked by a storyline such as Mamma Mia! and Jersey Boys, Smokey Joe’s Café is musical revue without any unifying plot. However, the show proved to be an audience favorite with its exciting range of catchy tunes, from romantic ballads, to infectious melodies, to novelty songs such as “Charlie Brown.”  If not for the music, this show would not have been as successful as it has been. Freed from their original contexts, these songs are performed out of pure love for the music. In the original production, the show’s popularity enticed famous guest stars to join the cast for limited engagements, including Gladys Knight, Tony Orlando, Lou Rawls, Ben E. King, Lesley Gore and Gloria Gaynor. Nevertheless, audiences eagerly embraced the show, allowing it to become the longest running musical revue on Broadway to date.

Is Smokey Joe's Cafe Good for Kids?
Yes, the show is most appropriate for children over the age of 10. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
