Rudolph at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden on Broadway - Show Summary - Photos
Show Summary - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical is making its New York debut at Madison Square Garden! The musical is based on the 1964 stop-motion TV special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which became an American family classic and a staple of the Christmas holiday spirit through its repeated airing on television in the Christmas season, before being released on home video. The catchy song of the same name was first released in 1949, written by Johnny Marks, which was in turn based on a book by Robert L. May written in 1939. In light of this long history, this is the first time this story has become a musical theatre show in a major New York production. It is the tale of Santa Claus’ previously unknown ninth reindeer, whose red nose glowed so brightly that it allowed Santa Claus to make his rounds delivering presents, despite a horrendous blizzard. While this was the extent of the original book and song, the television special elaborated on the story, adding in a backstory of how Rudolph was a misfit child who was taunted by the other children, and how he developed a friendship with a misguided elf who really wanted to be a dentist. The stage musical builds this story out to even greater dimensions of fun and entertainment for the whole family! The script is adapted by Robert Penola, with arrangements and orchestrations by Timothy Splain, in a stage production conceived and directed by Jeff Frank and First Stage, and produced by Iconic Entertainment and Right Angle Entertainment.
