Show Summary - The Lion King
The Disney Theatrical production of The Lion King on Broadway, is based on the 1994 animated film of the same name. It is the story of a young lion named Simba, who inherits an animal kingdom in Africa at a young age due to his father’s death. Simba buckles under the pressure of leadership and runs away from his inherited responsibility. He is raised by a comedic animal duo consisting of a meerkat named Timon and a warthog named Pumbaa. Meanwhile, his childhood friend Nala stays in the kingdom as it deteriorates under the rule of Simba’s scheming uncle, Scar. All-grown-up Simba returns home to save his kingdom and win Nala’s romantic affection.
The plot is based on the Bible stories of Joseph and Moses. Hints of Shakespeare's Hamlet also appear in the story. Musicians Elton John, Tim Rice, and Hans Zimmer wrote the original songs and the score, for which they won many awards. It is the highest grossing Broadway show in history as well as the fourth longest running show. Lion King has toured all over the world, having been translated into many languages including Chinese, German, Japanese and Spanish. In January 2014 the show became the first Broadway show to gross over a billion dollars worldwide.

What Is THE LION KING Like? Originally directed by Julie Taymor, this long-running Broadway musical favorite incorporates amazing costumes and stage puppetry. The Lion King breaks new ground on the theatrical methods used for humans to portray animals onstage. As the animals walk down the aisles, a good orchestra seat can mean the audience is arms’ length from the magnificent creatures. Furthermore, the score is absolutely wonderful, with such catchy favorites from the animated film as “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” “Circle of Life,” “Be Prepared,” “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” and “Hakuna Matata.” This show is an amazing way to re-live the animated film while experiencing an entirely new theatrical treat.Young and old are left breathless by the remarkable African animals brought to life and the heart warming songs and story.
Is THE LION KING Good for Kids? Children will absolutely adore this show. Still, Disney recommends that The Lion King is best for children ages 6 and up, although performances are recommended for a General Audience. Anyone entering the theatre, regardless of age, must have a ticket, even if they sit on your lap.
