The theme of this year's event, which will feature more than 200 scantily clad Broadway dancers, is the information superhighway. And if anyone can actually succeed in making the internet sexy, it's director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell, the creator of Broadway Bares. Broadway stars who will also be participating include Daniel Reichard (Jersey Boys), Gavin Creel (Hair), Allison Janney (9 To 5), Sutton Foster (Shrek), and Ugly Betty star Michael Urie. The proceeds from the event will, as always, go to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) charity. This award was created to honor unusual, non-traditional, and limited run Broadway shows that didn't fit so neatly into the Best Play or Best Musical categories. Nominees in that category this year included Will Ferrell's limited engagement (almost) one-man show You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush, the magical wintry clown show Slava's Snowshow, and winner Liza's at the Palace starring Liza Minnelli. The advantage of eliminating the category is that these Broadway shows are now eligible for other production element awards such as set design and costumes, which they previously weren't eligible for. To ensure that these special theatrical events can still be recognized, the Tonys will consider them for the Best Play or Best Musical categories. The Tony committee will also reserve the right to honor these types of shows with a Special Tony Award if deemed worthy.

Broadway Flop Glory Days To Get Cast Recording

The Broadway musical Glory Days, which had an extraordinarily brief run, being one of those rare Broadway shows to both open and close on the same night, will be getting a cast recording to preserve its score. The short-lived show about four high school friends reuniting after some time away at college was written by James Gardiner (book) and Nick Blaemire (music and lyrics). They debuted the pop musical at the Signature Theatre in 2008, and then it was quickly transferred to the Circle in the Square Theatre on Broadway, but unfortunately largely negative reviews caused the show's producers to make the quick decision to shutter it. However, the show's original four-man cast - Steven Booth, Andrew Call, Jesse JP Johnson, and Adam Halpin - will reunite to record the cast CD for Ghostlight Records. With this new recording, and plans to license Glory Days for future productions, the musical should expect to continue having a life, despite its failure to find an audience on Broadway.

First Post-Tony Casualties - Four Broadway Shows Close Today

Four Broadway shows will be taking their last bows today. Two of the closures - Exit the King and Joe Turner's Come and Gone - were limited runs and therefore expected. However, two other closings - Reasons To Be Pretty and Guys and Dolls - were only announced days ago and likely due to their failure to earn any Tony Awards this past Sunday. Post-Tony closing announcements are something of a tradition on Broadway. Many struggling shows make the effort to continue running until Tony time, in the hopes that if they snag a win, it will result in an upswing in ticket sales. Unfortunately Reasons To Be Pretty, which has had a hard time selling tickets despite good buzz and positive reviews, lost the Best Play award to God of Carnage, and it didn't get any actor wins either. Although Guys and Dolls did fail to win Best Musical Revival, its closing announcement was far more surprising, considering it has done respectable (if not impressive) box office sales during its run.

God of Carnage and Billy Elliot Take Top Honors at Tonys

The sun shined in Radio City Music Hall last night where they held the 63rd Annual Tony Awards, and where Best Musical Revival winner Hair made a particularly impressive showing. The broadcast's opening number began with Elton John singing a song from Best Musical winner Billy Elliot, which led into a medley that featured several current Broadway shows, culminating in all of the performers singing "Let the Sun Shine In" together on stage as Hair's hippies prowled through the aisles and danced with Tony attendees. The rest of the ceremony - for better or for worse - was similarly eventful, and was jam-packed with musical numbers this year (including songs from touring shows Legally Blonde, Mamma Mia, and Jersey Boys). Neil Patrick Harris proved to be a great host, with a relaxed demeanor and a sharp wit - he also sang a hilarious closing song recapping highlights from the ceremony. Big winners during the night included Best Play winner God of Carnage and Best Revival of a Play winner The Norman Conquests. Actors that took home trophies included Angela Lansbury and Geoffrey Rush, whose acceptance speeches were particular highlights, Next To Normal's Alice Ripley, West Side Story's Karen Olivo, and the trio of young men who play the title role in Billy Elliot.

Tony Awards Tonight

Attention theater fans: Tonight is your night! It's Tony Awards night, which is practically a national holiday for those who love Broadway. The 63rd Annual Tony Awards will air on CBS at 8pm Eastern time in a three-hour broadcast coming live from Radio City Music Hall in midtown New York City. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) hosts the ceremony, which will feature musical numbers from the nominated shows, in addition to the awards. The impressive list of presenters will include Will Ferrell, Nicole Kidman, Jane Fonda, Kristin Chenoweth, Anne Hathaway, Angela Lansbury, Kevin Spacey, Susan Sarandon, James Gandolfini, and many more. For Broadway lovers who would like to enjoy the telecast in the company of fellow theater fans, there is going to be a simulcast of the ceremony in Duffy Square (home of the TKTS booth), right in the heart of Times Square. Hosted by Tovah Feldshuh (currently starring in the Broadway play Irena's Vow), this special broadcast of the Tonys will also include the untelevised pre-show Creative Arts Awards from 7pm to 8pm.

Obama Visit Spikes Ticket Sales For Joe Turner's Come and Gone

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle had a date night in New York City this past Saturday night, and the centerpiece of their evening out was a Broadway show. The Obamas visited the Belasco Theatre in Times Square, taking in the Tony Award-nominated Broadway revival of August Wilson's play Joe Turner's Come and Gone. The audience at the performance was delighted to have the Commander-in-Chief in attendance with them, and they weren't the only audiences affected by the Obamas' Broadway visit. The press coverage of the First Couple at the show proved to be phenomenal publicity for Joe Turner's Come and Gone, which was struggling with ticket sales. According to the New York Post, Joe Turner's sold three times as many tickets as usual on the day after the President and First Lady attended the play. With 30 songs, the recording is a 2-disc set and features vocals by Alice Ripley and J. Robert Spencer. The Broadway cast album for the new revival of West Side Story, starring newcomer Josefina Scaglione and Karen Olivo (In the Heights), is on the verge of release, set to come out on June 2. (The extremely short-lived new musical The Story of My Life, starring Will Chase and Malcolm Gets, will also have its cast CD released on that day.) Fans of that classic Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score, featuring songs like "Maria" and "Tonight," will want to get the new recording, especially since it has something prior incarnations don't - Spanish language versions of "I Feel Pretty" and "A Boy Like That". Another Broadway revival, the new production of Hair, also has a recording soon to be released. The play was written by Moises Kaufman and stars Jane Fonda as a musicologist obsessed with composer Ludwig van Beethoven. The production officially opened on Broadway on March 9 for a limited run. The drama, which features accompaniment by a live pianist (Diane Walsh), garnered a total of five Tony Award nominations for Best Play, Best Leading Actress in a Play (Fonda), and Best Featured Actor in a Play (the wonderful Zach Grenier as Beethoven), as well as well-deserved nods for its lighting and clever set design. Although Jane Fonda, returning to Broadway for the first time in several decades, deservedly received a lot of attention for appearing in 33 Variations, the production has an all-around fine cast, including Colin Hanks (son of a certain well-known actor named Tom), Samantha Mathis, and Susan Kellermann. It is extremely unusual for a Broadway show to close on a Thursday (shows usually close on Sundays), but Fonda had another commitment that required closing before Sunday.

Drama Desk Awards Honor Norman and Billy

The 54th Annual Drama Desk Awards, which recognize the best of New York theater both on and off Broadway, were held tonight at LaGuardia Concert Hall in a ceremony hosted by Harvey Fierstein. Not surprisingly, Billy Elliot took the most honors, nabbing all 10 of the awards that it was nominated for, including Outstanding Musical, Director of a Musical, Choreography, Book, and the Best Music award for its composer, Elton John. The Norman Conquests conquered the Outstanding Revival of a Play category, Hair took Outstanding Revival of a Musical, and Pulitzer Prize winner Ruined got Outstanding Play. Special Outstanding Ensemble Performance awards were given to the casts of The Norman Conquests and The Cripple of Inishmaan. The Drama Desks are sometimes thought of as an early indicator of how the Tony Awards might go (much like the Golden Globes are to the Oscars), but this year there were some pretty significant differences between the two. The Drama Desk's Outstanding Play winner, Ruined, for instance, isn't even eligible for a Tony because it is an Off-Broadway production and the Tonys only recognize Broadway shows. Meanwhile Next To Normal, a major Tony contender for Best Musical and other awards, wasn't eligible for a Drama Desk this year because it had already been eligible last season, when it appeared in a high profile Off-Broadway production at Second Stage Theatre.

Neil Patrick Harris Tapped To Host Tony Awards

The host of the 63rd Annual Tony Awards has finally been announced. Actor Neil Patrick Harris will serve as master of ceremonies on the telecast, which is set to air June 7 on CBS from 8:00 to 11:00pm, broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall. Harris first experienced celebrity as a young actor on the hit television series Doogie Howser, M.D., in which he played a medical prodigy. As an adult he went on to earn his stripes in the theater, performing in productions in Los Angeles and London, and appearing on Broadway in the musicals Cabaret and Assassins, and in the award-winning drama Proof. More recently, Neil Patrick Harris has regained a television following with his hilarious turn as womanizer Barney on the TV show How I Met Your Mother.

Nathan Lane To Head Cast of Broadway Bound Addams Family Musical

The official casting announcement for the new Broadway musical version of The Addams Family has finally come out. As expected, Nathan Lane (currently on Broadway in Waiting For Godot) and Bebe Neuwirth (Broadway's Chicago, TV's Frasier) will star as Gomez and Morticia Addams. Kevin Chamberlain (Seussical) will play Uncle Fester, Jackie Hoffman (Xanadu, Hairspray) is Grandmama, and Tony Award nominees and Broadway regulars Terrence Mann and Carolee Carmello will play supporting roles. Based on the famous cartoons by Charles Addams, The Addams Family musical is written by Jersey Boys librettists Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman, and composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa. The show is directed and designed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, the men behind the macabre musical Shockheaded Peter. The Addams Family will have its world premiere at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre in Chicago this November before opening on Broadway in March 2010.

Impressionism Suddenly Closes Broadway Production

The new Broadway play Impressionism ended its production at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre today, far earlier than originally planned. The limited engagement was originally scheduled to play at the Schoenfeld through July 5, but negative buzz and poor reviews led to low ticket sales, leaving the struggling show little choice but to end its Broadway run early. Written by Michael Jacobs (Cheaters) and directed by Jack O'Brien (Hairspray, The Full Monty, The Coast of Utopia), Impressionism starred Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen as a photographer and a gallery owner, respectively. This was Irons first time on Broadway in over 20 years - the British film actor's only other time on the Great White Way was in the original Broadway production of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing. The Tony-winning Allen, too, is a film star with stage roots, and her last appearance on Broadway was in Wendy Wasserstein's play The Heidi Chronicles in 1990. The strong supporting cast of Impressionism included Andre De Shields, Aaron Lazar, Marsha Mason, and Michael T. Weiss.

Billy Elliot Leads the 2009 Tony Award Nominations

The nominations for the 63rd Annual Tony Awards have been announced, and Billy Elliot leads the pack with 15 nominations, tying it with The Producers as the Broadway show with the most Tony Award nods in history. The original new Broadway musical Next To Normal received 11 nominations, Hair and Shrek the Musical grabbed eight, and Mary Stuart and The Norman Conquests were the plays that received the most recognition, each getting seven nominations. Significant snubs this year include the well-received production of The Seagull starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Peter Saarsgard, the new Jason Robert Brown musical 13, and the new revival of Desire Under the Elms starring Brian Dennehy. Other surprises include Daniel Radcliffe's failure to secure a Best Actor nod for his work in Equus, 9 To 5 being shut out of the Best Musical category, and John Goodman and Bill Irwin (both in Waiting For Godot) being snubbed. The Tony Awards ceremony will air on CBS on June 7, broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Broadway Hit Hair To Tour Next Year

Can't make it to New York City to see all the best Broadway shows? Then don't worry, at least one of this season's biggest smashes may be coming to a theater near you. The hit Broadway revival of the 'tribal love-rock musical' Hair is set to launch a national touring production in the 2010-2011 season, though no dates or cities have been announced yet. Hair is currently playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, following its run last summer as part of the Public Theater's "Shakespeare in the Park" season at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park. Hair, which premiered Off-Broadway in 1967, went on to a successful Broadway production at the Biltmore Theatre the following year. The loosely structured musical is about a group of East Village hippies and one of their members, Claude, who gets drafted to go to Vietnam. The show features a number of songs that went on to become classics, including "Good Morning Starshine," "The Age of Aquarius," "Easy To Be Hard," "Let the Sunshine In," and the title song "Hair". The Broadway revival has been a big hit with Broadway critics and audiences alike, and the show actually invites audiences onstage at the end of the show each night to dance with the cast.

Television and Stage Star Bea Arthur Dies at 86

Bea Arthur has sadly passed away at the age of 86. Younger generations know the tall, wryly funny actress from her role as Dorothy Zbornak on the NBC television sitcom Golden Girls, but older TV fans also know her from her earlier sitcom Maude (a spin-off born from her riotous guest turn on All in the Family). However, despite all of the TV success she found in her later years, Bea Arthur actually made her name on the New York stage. Her first significant role was playing Lucy Brown in the 1954 Off-Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera. Her first show on Broadway was Plain and Fancy, but the parts she is best remembered for are Yente in the original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof and as Vera Charles in Mame (she was also in the film version of the latter musical). Bea Arthur won two Emmy Awards (and many more Emmy nominations) and a Tony Award for her work. She is survived by two sons and her grandchildren.

Morton and Rashad Join Broadway's August: Osage County In May

On May 26, the Broadway production of the play August: Osage County will get two very interesting additions to the cast. Amy Morton, who originated the role of Weston daughter Barbara (for which she received numerous awards and nominations), will return to the part that she made such an indelible mark on. On that same day, Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show, numerous Broadway productions including the recent Cat On A Hot Tin Roof revival) will take on the role of pill-popping Weston family matriarch Violet. Morton and Rashad, both formidable actresses, will give fans of the Broadway play a good excuse to go back and see it again. August: Osage County began at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago before coming to Broadway for what was supposed to be a limited run and soon turned into a long run that is already a year and a half strong. After receiving rave reviews, Tracy Letts's dysfunctional family drama went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Off-Broadway Play "Ruined" Wins Pulitzer Prize For Drama

It's official, Lynn Nottage's play Ruined has won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The speculation that Nottage's excellent drama about women in the Congo might take the prize began as soon as it began Off-Broadway in its production at the Manhattan Theatre Club in January. Ruined had its premiere in the autumn of 2008 at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, which commissioned the play. Both productions were directed by Kate Whoriskey, who had a significant role in helping Nottage develop the play. With any luck, the Pulitzer Prize win will help raise the profile of Ruined, which is an important play that exposes many of the horrors that women in Africa are facing in war-torn lands where they frequently become victims of violence and sexual abuse. Part of Nottage's triumph, though, is that she takes this grim subject matter and still manages to write a play full of humor and hope. Although the MTC production's future is far from certain, there is a possibility that Ruined could move to Broadway now that it has landed this prestigious prize (and it's likely to rack up a few more now that awards season is upon us).

Stephanie J. Block, her gig in the new Dolly Parton-penned Broadway musical 9 To 5 has paid off in more ways than one. Block, who has been working on her solo album debut, is getting the country music legend herself to appear on her new CD - the pair will duet on the 1974 classic "I Will Always Love You". Also appearing on Block's album, titled This Place I Know, will be an array of Broadway big shots, including Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz (accompanying Stephanie on piano for a recording of his song "Making Good"), A Chorus Line composer Marvin Hamlisch (arranging and accompanying on his song "Smart Women," cut from the Broadway comedy Imaginary Friends), and Ragtime tunesmith Stephen Flaherty (the first recording of his song "Something Beautiful"). Considering Stephanie J. Block's already impressive Broadway credits - The Boy From Oz, Wicked, and The Pirate Queen - it's no wonder she was able to assemble such a team for her first solo outing. The album is due out on the PS Classics label on June 2, with a digital release on May 12.

Cirque du Soleil Extends Run Into June

Cirque du Soleil has just extended the run of its new show Kooza to June 7, giving audiences extra time to see this theatrical sensation. The show begins performances on April 16 under the Grand Chapiteau (i.e. the Big Top) at Randall's Island Park. (Randall's Island is part of Manhattan but actually located off the main island - and is reachable by driving, or through a combination of subway and bus). Directed by David Shiner, Kooza is the latest Cirque du Soleil extravaganza, full of music, beautiful visuals, and of course hilarious clowning and spectacular acrobatics. The story concerns a sad loner who is on a journey, searching for his place in the world, and comes into contact with a series of odd and interesting characters who help him find his way. Kooza is the latest of many touring Cirque shows to stop at Randall's Island Park, the most recent being Corteo and Varekai.

The Philanthropist Starring Matthew Broderick Begins On Broadway

The new Roundabout Theatre Company production of the 1970 play The Philanthropist, directed by David Grindley, starts performances at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway today, April 10. The production stars Matthew Broderick, who has appeared on Broadway in such shows as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Producers, and The Odd Couple. In The Philanthropist, which playwright Christopher Hampton (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) wrote as a response to Moliere's classic The Misanthrope, Broderick plays a university professor oblivious to the chaos around him. Also starring in this production are actors Steven Weber, Jonathan Cake, Anna Madeley, Samantha Soule, Jennifer Mudge, and Tate Ellington. The Philanthropist will have its official Broadway opening at the American Airlines on April 26, and the play is scheduled to have a limited run through June 28.

Reasons To Be Pretty Adds Monday Shows

The new Broadway play Reasons To Be Pretty is changing around its performance schedule a bit, now adding Monday night performances to the roster. This could be a smart move for the intimate four-person show, as it will have less competition with other Broadway shows and should therefore be able to bring in a bigger audience than it had been on Thursday nights (the Thursday night performance will be discontinued in favor of the new Monday night shows). Written by playwright Neil Labute, Reasons To Be Pretty started life Off-Broadway at the Lortel Theatre before transferring to the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway. The play, starring Thomas Sadoski, Marin Ireland, Piper Perabo, and Steven Pasquale, was acclaimed Off-Broadway and was also greeted with largely good reviews when it opened on Broadway recently. Reasons To Be Pretty is Neil Labute's latest play on the theme of beauty and how it affects our personal relationships - the previous two being The Shape of Things and Fat Pig. Although Labute has had numerous Off-Broadway and regional productions of his work, and he has written screenplays as well, this does in fact mark his debut on Broadway.

Rock of Ages Opens On Broadway

Rock of Ages, the new hard rock musical starring former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis, opens on Broadway. The new Broadway musical 9 To 5 is based on the 1980 film of the same name starring Jane Fonda (now on Broadway in 33 Variations), Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton herself. The musical version stars Allison Janney, Megan Hilty, and Stephanie J.
