Cat and Cry-Baby Close On Broadway Today

Sunday, June 22, 2008

Two Broadway closings today, one planned and one sudden. The all-star Cat on a Hot Tin Roof headed by James Earl Jones is ending its limited run today. And unfortunately the rockin' satire Cry-Baby is also shutting its doors, due to lack of ticket sales. Happily, Cry-Baby will live on in a national tour next year, and there is talk that this production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (presumably not with the entire Broadway cast intact) could turn up in London.

All-Black Cat Opens On Broadway Tonight

Thursday, March 6, 2008

The latest Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' Southern drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opens on Broadway tonight at the Broadhurst Theatre. This is the first Broadway production of the play to have an all African-American cast -- and what a cast! James Earl Jones stars as family patriarch Big Daddy, and Phylicia Rashad as his wife. Their miserable, alcoholic son Brick is played by Terrence Howard, with Anika Noni Rose starring as Brick's wife "Maggie the cat". Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is scheduled for a limited Broadway run, which will end on June 15 (Terrence Howard will be out April 15-May 22 due to film commitments).

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Starts Broadway Previews

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

The first-ever all African-American production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to play Broadway starts preview performances tonight. James Earl Jones, Phylicia Rashad, Terrence Howard, Anika Noni Rose, and Giancarlo Esposito head the cast of this Tennesse Williams family drama, directed by Debbie Allen. Most of the venerable performers headlining the production are Broadway veterans, but film actor Howard (Hustle & Flow, Crash) is making his Broadway debut here. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof will have its official Broadway opening at the Broadhurst Theatre on March 6, with a planned closing date of April 13.
