Most fans of the musical Mamma Mia will never have a chance to sing its infectious ABBA songs on Broadway, but you can experience the next best thing at your local cineplex. The sing-a-long version of the new Mamma Mia film is now playing at selected movie theaters, where you can sing like a Broadway star from the comfort of your seat! Mamma Mia, the new movie version of the smash hit West End and Broadway musical, picked a tough weekend to open, going head-to-head with the record-breaking Batman sequel The Dark Knight. However, although Mamma Mia only pulled in $27,751,240 versus Batman's $158,411,483, the ABBA musical still did better than last summer's big Broadway-to-Hollywood transfer, Hairspray, which debuted at a few hundred thousand less. Hairspray was considered a box office hit, so hopefully this bodes well for Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia, which stars Meryl Streep, also has the advantage of appealing to that often-ignored segment of the population known as women - especially middle-aged women. As a result, Mamma Mia could continue doing steady business throughout the rest of the summer, providing a nice alternative for people who don't care for the special effects-laden blockbusters.

After conquering the West End, Broadway, and cities around the world, Mamma Mia finally arrives in movie theaters today. The film version of the silly ABBA musical has an all-star cast headed by Meryl Streep. Even people who didn't care for the show on Broadway may find the film irresistible with its Greek island setting, fantastic cast, and infectious spirit.

Today, the Broadway production of Mamma Mia! became the 18th-longest running musical in Broadway history. The hit ABBA musical, which doesn't show signs of slowing down anytime soon, bypassed The Producers to gain its spot.

With the excitement of the Hairspray movie come and gone (though not completely -- the film is still selling tickets), Broadway fans can now look to the future. There is Sweeney Todd coming to theaters in December, but for those looking for something a bit lighter, get ready for Summer 2008. That's when the movie version of the ABBA musical Mamma Mia, starring Meryl Streep (!) and Pierce Brosnan (among many others), opens. USA Today has a "First Look" at the movie musical here. If you still want to catch the show on Broadway before seeing it on the big screen, get your tickets now.
