'Tis the season to see holiday-themed theater. For decades, the ultimate Christmastime show has been the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which continues to bring eager audiences in by the droves to Radio City Music Hall at Rockefeller Center to see the world-famous Rockettes. But in recent years, other holiday shows such as a stage version of Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas and a new musical of A Christmas Carol have turned up in New York City in November and December. This year we have Cirque du Soleil's winter wonderland of a show, Wintuk, and at the Marquis Theater on Broadway Irving Berlin's White Christmas has returned for another limited holiday engagement. These shows are closing by New Year's or shortly thereafter, so if you want to get into the holiday spirit Broadway-style, you should act fast. If you miss them, they may very well be back - and, if not, they will have likely been replaced by something similarly jolly.Labels: Broadway, Christmas shows, Cirque du Soleil, holiday shows, White Christmas, Wintuk
Just a heads-up to Broadway fans out there: July 4th is kind of an unusual day on Broadway. Many shows have canceled their performances for the holiday. Those Broadway shows that are playing on Independence Day, though, often have great ticket discounts. So if you are looking for a fun way to celebrate the holiday, consider Broadway!

Visa Signature will be offering a taste of the Tonys by sponsoring a "Tonys Preview Concert," to be taped at Jazz at Lincoln Center on May 11. All of this season's Broadway musicals that are eligible for Tony nominations will perform at the event. The broadcast will air on CBS in the New York City area on June 7, but dates will vary in other markets, so check local listings. And don't forget to check out the Tony Awards ceremony itself, which will air on June 15.

The League of American Theatres and Producers just released a new report on Broadway demographics today, revealing some interesting statistics about the Great White Way. During this past Broadway season, attendance was up among foreign tourists, people under 18 years of age, and non-Caucasians. Some of the report's revelations are not too surprising, such as the news that the internet is now the most popular place to buy theater tickets. Other stats were more unexpected: 31% of all Broadway tickets are sold to the 6% of theatergoers who attend 15 or more shows a year.

Broadway star Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago) will be part of the entertainment line-up for PBS's annual Independence Day celebration, "A Capitol Fourth". Also participating in the July 4 festivities, which will air at 8pm live from Washington D.C., are Little Richard, American Idol finalist Elliott Yamin, and Yolanda Adams. Hosting the event is Tony Danza, who closed out the Broadway production of The Producers and will soon be taking over as Max in the Las Vegas version.

It has just been announced that the Tonys, the annual awards that reward Broadway excellence, will be adding two new categories in the 2007-2008 season: Best Sound Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Play. It's about time that the Tonys recognize good sound design, a vital part of the Broadway experience. Perhaps what finally led them to this decision was that the recently-completed Broadway season boasted so many shows that demonstrated such impressive sound design -- most notably Journey's End, Talk Radio, and The Coast of Utopia.

The Broadway musical phenomenon Spring Awakening and the epic play trilogy The Coast of Utopia took the top prizes at the Tony Awards on Sunday night, as expected. Also unsurprising: Frank Langella taking the Best Actor in Play award for his masterful performance in Frost/Nixon, Christine Ebersole winning the Best Actress in a Musical award for playing two different characters in Grey Gardens, and John Gallagher Jr. grabbing Featured Actor in a Musical for his tortured teen in Spring Awakening. Company got Best Musical Revival and the marvelous Journey's End (which sadly had its last Broadway performance just hours before the Tonys began) took Play Revival.

The Drama Desk Awards will be handed out this Sunday, May 20 at the LaGuardia Concert Hall in New York City. Unlike the Tonys, the Drama Desk doesn't only honor Broadway shows, but also includes Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway. We'll be sure to highlight the major winners here, but if you'd like to see the ceremony (which will be hosted by Kristin Chenoweth), NYC's PBS station will be broadcasting it on May 27 at 12:30pm.

Shortly after Tom Stoppard's trilogy The Coast of Utopia secured 10 Tony nominations comes the news that his latest play, Rock 'n' Roll, will open on Broadway on November 4. The cast of the London production, which includes Brian Cox, Rufus Sewell, and Sinead Cusack, will reprise their roles on Broadway. Rock 'n' Roll will begin preview performances on October 19 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater.

Sadly, the excellent Broadway revival of R.C. Sherriff's WWI drama Journey's End has just announced it will be closing on June 10. The acclaimed production, starring Hugh Dancy and Boyd Gaines, received critical accolades and several Tony nominations, but it just couldn't find an audience.

The Tony nominations came out today, and it's no surprise that the shows receiving top recognition were the epic Tom Stoppard play The Coast of Utopia and the hot new musical Spring Awakening, which have a total of 10 and 11 nominations, respectively. The real shock was what -- and who -- didn't manage to make the cut this year. Legally Blonde failed to land a Best Musical nom (despite the fact that it got nominations for Book and Score), and both The Pirate Queen and the Les Miserables revival were completely shut out. Broadway darling Kristin Chenoweth did not snag an acting nom for her performance in The Apple Tree, and Oscar winner Kevin Spacey's turn in A Moon for the Misbegotten was snubbed. Among those triumphant were Christopher Plummer (Inherit the Wind), Liev Schreiber (Talk Radio), Vanessa Redgrave (The Year of Magical Thinking), Angela Lansbury (Deuce), Audra McDonald (110 in the Shade), and David Hyde Pierce (Curtains). To see these heavy hitters, and many others, duking it out for the big prizes, tune into the Tony Awards on CBS on June 10.
